Nikon shooters: Custom curves for UW?

  1. Nikon shooters: Custom curves for UW?

Was curious if any nikon shooters have experimented with creating camera curves specifically geared for UW use (for different sea colors, depths, etc)?

  2. custom curves do not apply when shooting raw.

  3. Actually, Custom curves are applied to all images weather they are jpg or NEF.

You are right in a way--with NEF files you can always undo the effects of a tone curve in Capture. But having the right tone curves helps you get closer to begin with.

    from Fotogenic's Webstite:

(fotogenic has created and shared a set of custom curves for topside use that a lot of people online are using)

    http://fotogenetic.dearingfilm.com/

"If you are shooting RAW, custom tone curves are still useful because they provide a more accurate starting point, possibly reducing post-processing to simple white or black slider adjustments as opposed to complicated curves adjustments."

I'd really like to see someone experienced in digital processing try to create a tone curve optimized to give snappy underwater pics. Then I could spend less time postprocessing my NEF files.

  4. Yeah, that's pretty much what I meant as far as seeing curves optimized for UW use. I've seen tons for topside, oldskool's, fotogenic's, et al but was curious if anyone had tried gearing one towards UW. I dont think Craig was literally saying that they don't "apply" to raw, just that it doesn't make much of a difference since you can undo. I guess one could shoot in raw and then sample various curves in the RAW editor, no?

  5. The RAW data has not had curves applied to it. It may be the case that a tone curve may be tagged or embedded in the metadata for use by the RAW convertor, but ACR doesn't use it. I have no experience with the Nikon convertor.

Photographers like fotogenetic use custom tone curves because they shoot JPG and prefer to do as little postprocessing as possible. UW photography has too great a demand for postprocessing adjustment not to shoot RAW IMO. Custom curves are a convenient tool but their effects can be duplicated in post--even automated if you know beforehand the kind of curves you want.
