Dome Sun Shade w/Built in Lens Shade??

  1. Dome Sun Shade w/Built in Lens Shade??

So got lucky and scored a 10.5 Nikon, still in box, from someone getting out of the hobby. So I have the D100 in an Aquatica housing, using the 8" dome. Do I use the Sun Shade for the Dome when the lens has a built in one??

  2. I recommend the Aquatica fisheye shade. It mounts on your 8" dome port.

It will help knock down the flare from the sun, which can really kill a shot. Not only do you get flare stars, but it really reduces the contrast in the whole photo.

  3. I agree with James that you need a shade.

But these days it is not so essential. This is because unlike on film - most fisheye shots are taken with the sun, rather than against it (Rand, I added the "most" for your benefit, there).

Om film photographers would almost always try an include the sun in their fisheye shots. This would mean a shade to protect against flare from the dome and lens was essential. These days we shoot away from the sun and it is less essential. Just a thought.

Here is a shot of mine take with the 10.5 on digital.

While here is an example from Linda Dunk's 1996 winning BSoUP portfolio. Taken on film - note the sun:

  4. Not only is the shade important to help prevent flare and reflections it's also essential to protect your dome from nicks and scratches. When I'm on a diveboat I usually rest my housing dome-down on the shade. That way when your buddy's tank falls over and lands on your housing you only scratch the paint.

  5. Of course I have the Aquatica Wide Angle shade but not the Fisheye. Now it is a minor cost, comparatively, but it might be the straw that breaks the camel's back w/the better half (AND I AM NOT CALLING MY WONDERFUL WIFE A CAMEL!!) So do I use the Wide Angle shade or go without and just avoid shooting into the sun?

Oh and I just have to say ONLY 2 WEEKS till the Kona Aggressor!!!!

  6. Not sure but I think the wide-angle shade will show up in your images. Have a great trip.

  7. Yes it will show in the final image, the 10.5mm is a true 180 degrees fisheye unlike some lens like the 16mm fisheye that have a 180 degrees in 35mm but much less coverage in digitally cropped DSLR.

Have a good trip, heard the Kona aggressor is a cool boat, enjoy.

  8. I would risk it. But do try pointing it into the sun, too. Being able to see your images after every dive (and on the LCD after every shot) you'll soon learn what you can and can't get away with.

  9. And you'll also find looking at the sun through a viewfinder (Especially a magnified one) vs framing with an LCD can be an eye frying experience  . Be careful.
