  2. Trading up (D2X)?

    Trading sideways (different housing manufacturer)?

    or

Going to the dark side ??

  3. Hey Craig-

While in Socorro this past week I was able to use the Nexus, Ikelite and Light and Motion housings for the D70.. The Nexus (in my hands) handled much better than my Ikelite housing. So, I'm trading in the Ike housing, bought another Nexus D70 housing (backup) and have a D2X and Nexus D2X housing ordered. I can use all the same ports from current Nexus inventory for the D2X. Im moving over to D2x for more megapixels and CMOS sensor (which I think is better than CCD currently used).. Canon uses CMOS sensor and shooting with DREBEL in Socorro with same variables yielded (to my eye) slightly better saturation right out of camera with no tweaking in photoshop. I'll never swtich from Nikon or my MAC. I had both surgically attached.

  4. Great move Mike. (Saves me doing it until I get feed back from you on the D2x  ) Looking forward to your review and pics.

  5. Hello Michael,

What ports you are going to sell?

  6. I'll never swtich from Nikon or my MAC.  I had both surgically attached.

    Testify brother, testify...

  7. Michael; does your Nexus have the pickup viewfinder or the plain acrylic back? And how did you find the view finder in use vs the Ike?

  8. At one point I thought about buying a D70 and a Nexus or Subal housing, but I just couldn't justify buying a $2,800+ housing for a $900 camera.

    Cheers

    James

  9. Since when does "justify" come into the equation??

  10. Hi Craig-

The housing I have has a pickup lens for the viewfinder. The nexus housing is easier to use because it does not have a dual synch cord shooting off the back poking you in the face. There are a lot of other reasons I prefer the Nexus.. The aperture control knob, for instance, is easily accessed with right thumb and rotates toward or away from you. With the ike housing, this knob rotates clockwise or counterclockwise. It was never easy for me to change this without pulling my face away from viewfinder. Housing is smaller, lighter, less drag in water and handles are awsome.

James, I did not know the housing was 2800 bucks. I just order the stuff and business pays for it. Dont' tell my boss.

  11. Well, as Thom Hogan says, you either Need something or you Want something. Usually if you Need it, it's for a work assignment, family event, etc. If you just want it, then in your own mind at least, you have justify it.

My personal decision making factors are:

How easy will it be to sell large prints (for topsides work photos)?

Is the camera/housing/strobe/whatever about 2 times "better" than what I'm using now?

Should I test this out and get familiar with it so that I can answer questions about it on Wetpixel? :-) or at the HUPS meeting?

Will it make me look sexy? (this one is a joke of course, that's just darn near impossible)

Everyone's factors will be different of course.

    Cheers

    James

PS, in the end, rather than sell the Kodak and get a D70 and Subal, I decided to spend $1,000 more on the housing and get a Seacam and "break even" on the camera body by selling the Kodak and using the money to get a 1DmkII.

  12. Will it make me look sexy?

Well, if that Kodak had had an antialiasing filter, it might have handled your orangutan forearms in a more pleasing manner, thus achieving that end

  13. I was interested to see that you mentioned a Light and Motion housing for the D70....? I understood that they were not going to make a housing for this camera - was it a D70 or a Titan D100?

    Mark Webster

D100, LMI Titan, too many strobes

  14. I'll never swtich from Nikon or my MAC.  I had both surgically attached.

Hold up mate... then that whole conversation we had about Canon never happened? hmmm

I'd be interested in the answer to this too!

  16. hey guys-

sorry about that. the camera was a d100 in the light and motion with the ROC controller. damn, there was so much stuff to play with...someone had a Hugyfot housing with all kinds of weird parts sticking off of it and just about every type of digicam housing made.. This was not even a photo trip but everybody had a digital camera. Still a lot of film shooters as well.. I'll try to get some photos up.. We are buried in snow and Im digging out of that and the pile of papers on my desk!
