Synchronized Juvenile Spotted Drums

  1. Synchronized Juvenile Spotted Drums

This photo was from my first tip, right after purchasing my new C-5060. I was using the internal flash, since I didn't get my DS-125 until this Christmas.

I took about twenty pictures of these two, hoping to get a good one. They bounced around so much that all I could do is click and pray.

This is my first time posting to this forum, so have patience if I mess up. A friend showed me PhotoBucket and how easy it was to past the tags into forums. I've enjoyed the forum and reading all of the great advice from everybody.

  3. Nice colours on the image David.

I am guessing you were zoomed in with your camera hence the background out of focus.

One way to imporve this image is purely through patience. Spotted Drums are animals of habit and territory, they are also fairly human friendly after acclimatising.

1st : try getting at an image that is level with the fish, the angle you have used makes me feel like i am chasing the fish downwards.

2nd : rather than zooming try just slowly getting closer, even if it is just with your hand and camera as you can see the lcd screen. This will create a better depth of field (if that is what you want) which I would say would make this image better as there are two fish.

3rd : These fish will swim back and forth in the same route over and over and over again, even after you get close to them (as long as you do it calmly and slowly) so take your time over the photo and just move the camera in time to their pattern and get used to it trying to keep them in frame as you do, it is nicer to have both subjects fully in the frame.

4th : keep all of that going on as you take the photo .. pan with the fish .. this will counter act any shutter lag as you are moving with them and you can guarentee they will be in the frame (difficult at the moment the photo takes as the screen goes black i know)

all that leaves you with is the timing so that you catch the fish in the most photographic swimming position and backdrop etc. This should be easy too as you know your cameras lag and you also now know the fishes timing and route they swim !!!!

great start .. good luck for next time.
