Newbie needs advice on camera/housing/strobe combo on a $1k

  1. Hi

Ive got about $1k usd budgeted for a camera/housing/strobe setup (plus or minus depending on how important the feature)

so far ive looked into the Sony cybershot DSC-Px line. i understand it doesnt support external flash so that must be done as a slave (using fiber optic to sense the internal flash going off?)

    any other options you recommend?

    thanks much in advance! :)

  2. You may consider also the Canon S30/40 + the Canon WP-DC300 Waterproof Case.

    Canon S30 450$

    WP-DC300 170$

  3. If you read back through the archives, you'll find a wealth of information. General questions like this have not been getting much response lately, probabaly because people feel they've answered this over and over in the past. You can do a keyword search using the approprate link at the top of the page or change your preferences to show all the old topics. To do that, go into user control panel --> edit profile and set the topcis per page to something like 999. You'll see all the old threads that way.

Having typed this much already, I'll add that for that amount of money, you're probably looking at a 3 or 4 megapixel camera and a manufacturer's brand case. This pretty much limits you to Sony, Canon and Olympus cameras. For my money, the Olympus C-xxxx series and the corresponding case (PT-010) is the best bet out of this crowd. You should be able to get a camera, the case and an external strobe (should you want one) for what you are willing to spend. For your price limit you will, most likely, not find a setup that supports a hard-wired strobe. However, the slave strobes do work.
