Strobe Duration ?

  1. Strobe Duration ?

I was going to set up a scope and have a look but thaught I would ask first.

What is the flash duration on a strobe at full power ?

Specifically the DS125 but I guess thay will be mostly in the same ballpark.

  2. Its pretty varaible between models. But virtual/electronic aperture cameras have given us a rough idea.

My feeling is that all are more than 1/250th at full power. Indeed most probably exceed 1/500th to discharge fully. More powerful strobes can take longer.

I would be interested to hear what you get from the scope.

I don't know what your application is, but if a strobe discharges in 1/750th on full. And you want to shoot at 1/1500th you can always use 2 strobes on 1/2 power to get the equivalent of a full power hit.

  3. I dont know the answer to your question but I would guess somewhere around 1/1500. I bet Ike will jump in here before too long and give you the official time.

Just out of curiosity, why do you want to know?

  4. Jeff Farris conducted some top side tests of strobe power (including the DS 125) with relationship to shutter speed in his strobe survey. If you study the chart on page 2, you'll see that some strobes are not as affected by quicker shutter speeds while others find their full potential clipped. I'm not 100% sure, but I think Jeff used an Ikelite Light meter for his measurements of light and a C series Olympus (5050?) for shutter control and capture.

  5. Just a datapoint - According to Thom Hogan, the max duration from the SB800 is 1/830th

  6. Thanks for the input guys.

William :- No big idea I am afraid, I was just trying to get to grips with the relative timings of the shutter and strobe etc.
