strobe for Canon 20 D

6 posts
  1. I'm just about to upgrade from

Nikon Coolpix 5000, Sea & Sea housing, Sea & Sea YS 90 DX strobe

    to

Canon 20D, Ikelite housing, ????? strobe

I'd be really grateful for advice about the choice of strobe.

Should I keep the YS 90?

Does the Ikelite Substrobe DS-125 have a big advantage over the YS 90?

Do I have to buy a DS 125 to get e-TTL working with the Canon 20D?

Will the Ikelite housing allow the Canon 20 D to talk to the TTL on the YS 90?

    thanks for any advice

  2. If you are going with the Ikelite housing, I think you should go with the DS-125 so you can have the option of using TTL if you desire...should be great for macro.

The YS-90 is not as powerful as the DS-125 and it will not work with Ike's TTL

  3. I would suggest keeping the YS90DX for your first dives with the 20D and if you are unhappy with the performance then switch to a pair Ike DS-125s.

  4. Both good advice. Before upgrading, give the Sea and Sea strobe a try, you just might like it. The only downside is that you will need a special Ike to Sea and Sea cord to use that YS90DX.

The only way to get eTTL2 is to use Ikelite DS50 or DS125 strobes.

  5. Thanks!

Does it make sense to buy one DS 125 and keep the YS 90 for use as a second low-power strobe in slave mode?

    Adrian

  6. Sure, but it will be tricky. The eTTL2 system is a preflash system, so you'll have to set up the 90 to ignore preflash. You'll want to set it at a low power, because you never know how much strobe power the eTTL2 is going to call for and you don't want to blow the shot with the slave...

    Cheers
