Looks like the new Canon 60 EF-S macro lens won't release until 30 Apr at best. I'm leaving before that, so....anybody have experience with the Sigma? The price is right and I can upgrade later if I want.

Any experience with Sigma 50 EX DG

It´s a good lens, good optics but not a very fast lens, beter than the canon 50 macro.

There is already a post sigma vs canon 50 macro you should have a look

Comments retracted - sorry thinking too fast

Canon will likely have slightly better focusing and is a bit faster than the Sigma, but won't do 1:1.

Matt: I think that Starfish was comparing the Sigma 50 mm lens to the Canon 50 mm macro, not comparing the new unreleased [edit]60 mm EF-S.

True i was comparing the canon 50 vs sigma 50.
Bandit you can take a look at some fotos by David Haas at the ikelite web site using a sigma EX DG 50 macro in Australia.

The photos I posted here were shot using the Sigma 50 EX DG on my first dive UW with my 20D/Subal.
This lens is a bit slow to focus compared to my ultrasonic lenses. The Canon 50 mm is not ultrasonic either though. I'm happy with my purchase given the options at the time (prior to 60mm announcement).
At least I'll be able to use the Sigma 50 on full-frame sensor and 35 mm film cameras, unlike the Canon 60mm.

Note that this fish is aprox 1 inch long. The image is cropped about 20%. I could have moved closer to the subject. f16

Anyone using the Sigma 50mm EX DG in an Ikelite Canon dSLR housing? The Ike site says the #5505 flat port is the port for the Sigma 50mm lens but, I note that based on measurements, one of the shorter ports may suit it.
I'm just looking for someones real experience as I would guess that if the 5505 works well with the EX DG lens it would be a better buy than a shorter port.
Thanks,

I would email Ike, I had a similar question regarding a Nikon lens and got a response fairly quickly... try the email on the website.

Thanks, however I've pestered him enough and anyway wanted to share the answer as I guess it would or will become a regular question.
Also just looking for someones real experience.

I use the Sigma 50 RX DG behind a 5505 flat port on a Canon 20D. Excellent combination! No vignetting at infinity, and there is some distance from the port (on the inside) at 1:1. The lens is for me very good for macro, and for fish portraits. The lens has the capability of 1:1 macro, but due to close focus distance it is hard the get the strobes right when the subject is 3 cm in from of the port. The autofocus is fast, not as fast as a USM-lens, but more than enough for ordinary fish portraits.
