4 strobes, use slave setting or sync cords

  1. As mentioned in other thread, saw the incredible results a fellow diver was getting using 4 strobes for wide angle and 3 for macro. While on this trip one of my S&S 90DXs died. So to have a back-ups and start playing with this idea went out and picked up two S&S 350 Pros. (used at ½ price)

Currently using D100 in Aquatica housing with single bulkhead and duel sync cord. (Have back-up duel sync cord and bulkhead). In tropical waters, shooting WA, 4 strobe set, do you think I could get away with putting the 90DXs on slave with the 350s on the sync cord? Never used slave function, what are the downsides?

Otherwise have to change bulkheads and buy more sync cords.

  2. Hi, I wouldn't add more cords, I think 2 is too much already. I have two strobes and use one under slave (with Ikelite's TTL slave sensor). I believe you're shooting manual, so slave will work fine for you, just turn the flash to slave mode and whatever power setting you want, and then the slave should be triggered the main flashes. I heard some people say that sometimes the main flash won't trigger the slave, but that never happened to me.

  3. I got some pix back from being developed and was surprised that several shots in a row of other divers had their flashes synchronized with my shots! I surmised that they were slaved. So unless you are the only photographer around, you may have your slave flashes triggered by other photogs.

  4. That happend to me on this last trip. I was taking this shot and the other diver saw one of my strobes was firing with his.

  5. I never had that problem, as I usually go to remote locations, where I am the only photographer on the water. Anyways, I still prefer this inconvenient to the hassle of dealing with 4 cords (I can manage 2).
