Custom Housings

Just curious if any of the manufactures will do a custom housing. UK-Germany is one that I know of but are there others?

Hi Allen,

you should try our site to get an overview. We already considered to

mark some manfacturers "custom" or housings as "universal" but did

not do that yet. Some manufacturers such as GUN-LUX, Bruder,

BS Kinetics and Nimar have standard designs and just start drilling

different controls for each modell.

UK-GERMANY makes a lot of individual models but designs almost

everything from scratch very individually.

Maybe some other users could chime in to see if it's of interest, to

mark such housings or manufacturers.

I have been all over your site. It is a great resource. Thanks for putting together such a site. I will go back and look at some of the manufactures you mentioned. One that has a standard design would be perferable since the cost of a one off housing is probably going to be out of the budget. One manufacturer that I talked to about using their standard design is

Their little digital housing works only for cameras that have the lens offset from center. Mine is centered so it would not work. BTW, Equinox is was not listed on your site.

It would be interesting to know what camera you are trying to house and why. Unless there is a very good reason to house a particular camera you could find it's cheaper to replace the camera with one that already has a housing available for it.

The camera I want to house is a Contax TVS Digital.

The big reason I want to house it is because I already own it That said though the camera has a lot of functionality that other P&S cameras do not. For instance, both Program and Av modes, auto and manual focus, auto exposure bracketing, macro (down to 6 inches), min aperture (F2.8). The only drawback is that it like most P&S it is not TTL flash but has a sensor. About the only camera that comes close to my Contax is the new Canon SD500. Which I am considering.

If after looking at the specs. if there is a really good reason why I should not house my Contax I am certainly willing to listen. I use my Contax for a lot high altitude climbing (above 20,000) and it works like a charm and even though it is "only" 5M Pixels I am hesitant to replace it.

I am not specifically after a custom but a universal housing. A custom housing would be too expensive. However, universal housing that just needs to have buttons punched in is more of what I am looking for. Equinox makes one but it is for offset lenses. The Contac is centered so it will nto work. BS-Kinetics has a housing that I am considering.

I don't know how much a custom housing runs but for a little under $700 you could get a Fuji F810 and Ikelite housing. It has all the features you mentioned (i think) and is a small light camera.

After some searching I descided to give up on the custom housing and instead bought a Canon S70 and housing. Paid just barely over $600 including the shipping. I looked at the Fuji F810 but descided against it since it does not have a preflash which D2000 relies on and the 12MP offering is a gimick (I have written several interpolation algorithms as part of my research). Of course no camera is perfect .
