Greetings from the southern Red Sea

  1. Hi,

i'm back from a beautiful liveaboard trip to the southern red sea and still working on the gallery.

I managed to drown my second video light (i.e. no more light than my internal flash) and didn't have the camera with me on the 2 dives we saw hammerheads and a thresher shark (grrrrr!!)

Anyway, here is an example of what i managed to shoot:

    Coral grouper, C3030, PT-010, P-mode, internal strobe

Hope you like it - Sabine

  2. Hi Bine!

I feel sorry for you... My one and only flooding happened

on the last day of our trip. So, I was somehow lucky. Also

camera and housing survived it without any damage.

    Two questions concerning your trip:

    - which boat did you book for the safari?

    - which reefs did you make?

I am really jealous about the tresher! :P

Several people have reported it beeing

around a certain reef in the south...

This is why I want to go there for some

    photo-shark-hunting!

    cheers, from shisha smoking' andi

  3. Just got an idea:

Why not go after the tresher together?

...since you missed it on the first encounter. :P

    Ahhh, please don't kill me...

  4. quoting Andi:

    > Two questions concerning your trip:

    > - which reefs did you make?

The boat is called Miss Veena, the reefs were Sataya, Rocky Island, Zabargad, St. Johns, Mikauwa. Sataya, Erg Abu Dyab, Shaab Maksur and Abu Galawa.

It was supposed to be a normal tour from Hamata to St. Johns, excluding the Marine Parks (Rocky and Zabargad) but we were lucky because our captain took the risk.

Best dives were around Rocky Island (that's were we met the tresher shark and the hammerheads) and Erg Abu Dyab (hammerheads again).

We are actually considering a Marine Park safari around end of july, beginning of august, including the Brothers, Deadalus, Rocky, Zabargad and Elphinstone. Not sure whether this is going to be a 1 or 2 week trip and whether to do it this year or 2003.

Our dive guide said, this time of the year is the best to go to the Brothers and we all know that there is a 99% shark guaranty.

The Miss Veena is a very nice and comfortable liveaboard, it is operated by ORCA and Diving World (UK), the crew and dive guide speak english.

Maybe other forum members are interested to join us ?

I'll post a travel report along with the picture gallery.

  5. Hi Sabine,

i am still waiting impatiently for the album of ur safari.

  6. Sorry that it took so long, but i polished up my dive page and had to rewrite all my galleries.

Here are the Southern Red Sea UW-pictures:

    http://www.dive.snoack.de/MissVeena042002/e_gallery2.html

I was not as happy with the camera as in Indonesia, probably because there were few macro/close up motives and i was really missing a strobe.

Anyway, this should give you an idea of what to expect in the Southern Red Sea and what we saw during our trip.

I tried to describe every photo and i also added a map and a travel report (sometimes it was hard to describe everything in English, please remember that this is not my native language :P)

    Have fun - Sabine

  7. Sabine,

just want to compliment you on your new and redesigned Digital Gallery. Nice job!!

  8. Hi Bine,

really nice stuff... It reminds me that I have to polish my sharm & gozo galleries too... How do you find the time for all that detailed comments... phew...

PS: Did I mention that I'll do the same trip from 12th September till 22nd with my new wide angle configuration ;-) I hope to catch some hammerheads, too!

  9. How do you find the time for all that detailed comments...

    Night shifts :D

Did I mention that I'll do the same trip from 12th September till 22nd with my new wide angle configuration ;-) I hope to catch some hammerheads, too!

I thought Lars went to Singapore with your second strobe ? Or did you buy something new ?

Is your trip a Marine Park tour or St. Johns only ? Because Rocky is normally not included in the St. Johns tour and it was the best dive site we visited.

If you are going to St. Johns, make sure to dive at Gota El Sogaira and also plan at least one dive at Erg Abu Dyab (near Dolphin Reef).

Anyway - have fun, lots of sharks and dive safely.

We decided to make the Brothers tour next year and go to Bali instead (on Sept. 18th.).

Yesterday my new strobe arrived, just in time to make some tests before we pack and go ... :P

  10. Hi Sabine,

really nice images on your website. Reminds me of my last trip to Egypt and makes me want to go again.

I've actually been a second time to St. John's in the meantime, once in November and once in May. A lot more current in May and a lot more hammerheads! But they were still too far away to get a decent picture :-(.

PS: the images are online as taken in the water, no photoshopping etc.

    PPS: Feedback welcome!

  12. Andi,

These are awesome! Can't wait to see the rest.

    Cheers

    James

  13. There are some great shots in your galleries!

Now all you have to do next is to complete all the others galleries and write a full description on your dives.

We have what to wait for...

  14. Yes, I can see that you have two strobes and it improved your photos a lot. I found that my pix got a LOT better when I started using a small slave strobe. Maybe someday I will be able to afford two BIG strobes...:P

Now to just get rid of that shutter lag eh? It makes getting portraits of marine life a lot easier, I can tell you!

FWIW, even though I have my S2 setup, I have still kept my Coolpix 990 and Ike housing.

Once again, great shots. I like those giant squirrelfish a lot.

    Cheers

    James
