Olympus housing

  1. Olympus announces a housing for their dSLR. If it is priced simialry to name brand P&S housings (compaired to aftermarket housings) I would expect the number of Olympus users on this forum to increase dramatically...

  2. Great to finally see some pix of this machine. Hopefully there will be some available for review soon. Alex

  3. I hope Olympus won't repeat the flatport item for wideangle once more.

This was not a major problem with the compact digicams because Inon provided a wideangle converter including a dome glass. But now they deal with SLR lenses. That would call for third parties to make dome ports in order to make this system usable at all. I really hope the PPO-E02 will feature a curved glass.

  4. What about STROBE!! The FL-36 appears to be a little more powerful than the FL-20, but still not enough.

    Anybody heard anything about pricing??

  5. as far as I know www.mike-dive.de is going to install standard Nikonos bulkheads into the housing as he does for the smaller Olympus cam housings. Same to be expected with the conversion unit (for people prefering TTL).

  6. Hi!

I hope Olympus won't repeat the flatport item for wideangle once more.
I'm afraid they do. The PPO-E02 will house the 14-54 and teh 11-22 as well. There are two possibillities:

    1) the port is flat and a pain for both lenses

    2) the port is curved but placed exactly wrong for at least one of the lenses. The optimal positions differ by 14mm (14-54 @ 14mm, 11-22 @ 11mm) so there's no chance for a "one fits all" solution.

The UK-Germany housing for the E-300 will be slightly mroe expensive but offer properly placed ports and a Nikonos strobe connector as well. The ports will also be interchangeable with the E-1 housing.

Both UK-Germany housings are currently in production. They are expected to be available for a test in a few weeks.

  7. Thanks Helge. Useful but frustrating news. Alex

  8. What about the possibility that Olympus will provide a 14mm extension ring?

the japanese oly site states a rrp of 150,000 yen for just the housing without ports.

that's double the cost of ikelite's housing.

    really hope it's wrong.

  10. Hi!

What about the possibility that Olympus will provide a 14mm extension ring?
    1) they didn't say to do so.

    2) if it's a flat port, it's still a pain in the ass. If it's a dome, it'll be ok. At least, if the usable angle of the dome is larger or equal 89° (the max. angle for the 11-22mm). I had a talk with a European sales representative of Olympus/Aqualung. They are searching for somebody to provide other ports than the ones offered by Olympus. I'm not sure if they find a cheap and practical solution.

The UK-Housing comes with a dome for all lenses on request. You may choose from flat ports for the 50mm macro, the 14-45, the 14-54 and domes for the 14-45, 14-54, 11-22, 7-14 lenses.

There'll be a possibility to have either a dedicated dome or port extensions. Dedicated domes are a bit cheaper than a shorter one plus extension but you may use it with a couple of lenses.

The dome window allows a maximum angle of 122°. You may therefore use it for all available Olympus lenses (the 7-14mm has 114° @7mm).
