1DmarkII housing

  1. I posted this under consumer digicams in error so I thought I would drag my question over to this forum as it fits this area better.

I have just become the new owner of a 1dMarkII. Does anyone know if the Sea&Sea housing for the 1Ds fits the 1DMarkII? I have tried a search for the answer on this forum but could not find the answer. Can anyone recommend a housing other than the Sea&Sea version? I appreciate anything you can add.

  2. The Sea and Sea housing for the 1DS is very expensive. Personally I think that the Seacam 1D series housing offers much better quality. The Subal housing is also worth checking out.

  3. I am with Alex on this one, I belive the Sea&Sea is more expensive than the Subal and Seacam, and I think the last two are much better housings. The Sea&Sea looks like a big box and it is larger and heavier than the Subal and Seacam.

But, to answer your question, I am almost sure that it does, the cameras are almost identical, just like the D2h and D2x. I am sure that the Seacam housing fits both the 1d and 1ds. Check James' article on the last issue of the Underwater Photography online magazine, one of the reasons that he bought the 1D/Seacam housing was the possibility to upgrade to a 1Ds and keep the same housing, which makes sense, but I still prefer the D2x.

  4. It'd be really nice if more housings has some form of engineering 'flexibility' built into them, i.e. geometrically re-engineered prongs to accommodate similar button positions, and the ability to make some retrofits to buttons that are way out of whack. I'd rather have my Titan D100 housing, it is almost all electronic control, so maybe the remaining buttons and electronics could be retro'd to a newer DX2 assuming the bodies are similar in size. But you get the point. Wishing, wishing, wishing.

  5. Unless there has been an undocumented design change, the Sea & Sea Housing is for the 1DS/1D camera's and not the 1D Mark II. The 1D Mark II is smaller and three of the control buttons on the top will not operate. Also the buttons below the LCD on the rear won't work with the ID Mark II. This is also a build to order housing with a three month lead time. The price is double the cost of a Subal or Seacam.

  6. Thank you all for your responses. The information is very helpful and I will use it as I approach a new housing. The Canon line of DLSR's have stayed consistent with their 1 series digital camera bodies with the exception of a button or two but in the underwater housing world, that can be a huge issue. I appreciate these companies designing new housings for new cameras as they pop out so quickly these days but some additional thought and research should be put into modifications the public could apply into housings they already own so that new(and similar) lines of bodies could be used. I have a S&S housing for a 10D but won't touch the 20D unless I decide to self made modifications to the interior of an already expensive housing. Just like you, Kelpfish, wishing, wishing, wishing.
