Use of filters

  1. I am using UV(0) filters on my lenses when taking pictures topside.

This is mainly to protect the optics against scratches, dust and too many cleaning.

Does it have any disadvantage if I use them underwater as well?

Inside the housing a protection is not necessary, of course, but it is easier to let them in place.

  2. Hi Thilo

Yep, I do the same thing - and can't say I have seen a problem: but thoughts from others would be very interesting. The only thing I have found you do have to watch for is if you use a second filter on top of the UV. I find that vignetting them starts to creep in on the widest end of my Nikkor 12-24.

  3. Hi Thilo, I recommend removing the filter on wide angle lens, the reason is that the letterring on the side of your filter is usually white and I have seen the lettering reflected inside the dome and appearing in the picture, needless to say it's very subtle and not something you would notice on your LCD screen, it happened to me indoor (totalled a commercial shoot in 35mm :D ) and outdoor in shallow sunny situation. Now I am wiser and remove it prior to setting up the housing. it serve no purpose u/w and considering the amount of effort into setting up for u/w photography compared to topside, I figure it's worth the extra time to remove it.

Regards and by the way snow as melted up here finally :)
