  1. This will allow you to turn off the internal flash when connected to an external flash. You have 2 settings for shutter lag - one supposedly decreases lag. They also claim to have improved the LCD performance in low light.

  2. just installed it. tested in the room. almost NO SHUTTERLAG (compared to firmware 1.6 that is) and flash shut off works. try in the water sunday.

  3. I feel stupid here. I have installed the Nikon software. (Win98se) when I plug the camera in, it detects new hardware and looks for a driver which I cannot find!!! Where the hell is the driver for the camera??

  4. don't know about windows, but when I followed Nikons instructions exactly on a Mac the firmwear installed with no problems. Note with the Mac you could only install with 9.2, not with OS x so maybe its a problem with the operating syst. you are running.

When I fire my DS125 with the internal strobe off I still get a preflash

  5. The drivers were not included with the software. They were in the root dir on the CD. I browsed every folder on it but overlooked the root dir :P

I followed the directions on nikonusa.com by installing the USB update and the updater cannot find my camera. I can transfer images with the nikon view software though. I think its about time to give win 98 the boot.

  6. first time I tried to install the upgrade the computer couldn't find the camera either. Then I started from scratch and followed the instructions exactly and it worked fine. The camera didn't appear on the computer, but uploaded the upgrade properly. The first time I didn't install the upgrade program on my computer and then restart it. When I did that step first it worked fine.

  7. I had no problems when I installed it. I followed the instructions exactly and restarted the computer also. Nikon view worked fine also. It is much better than view 4.

  8. I am using win 98 on my laptop which I did the update from. I installed the drivers from the nikon disc that was included with the camera, did the usb update and it still could not see the camera when I tried to do the update. Even though it was able to see the camera's cf card as another drive.

All I had to do was restart the computer and then plug in the camera to the usb port and it worked fine.

  9. I never did get it to work in 98. I took it to to the office and did it on my XP system. Worked like a charm. Nikons site says that it may not work on all PCs. Hmmm.

  10. 1.7 rocks. Auto focus under low light conditions was greatly improved. Shutter lag was greatly improved also. Maybe 1/3 the time. Raw images write about 2x Tiff images speed. The raw images in Nik view 5.1.3 were appreciably better looking than Jpeg fine.

You still have shutter lag, but it is more of a minor annoyance than a major ditractor.

  11. I´ve installed it few minutes a go and it looks fine!

I´ll try it underwater tomorrow, with my new DS125 strobe!

    Thanks Ike!

  12. I read somewheres that the shutter lag on the 5000 with 1.7 is 70ms or about the same as an E-20.
