Just got my new Ikelite housing for Canon 20D. After I assembled the clamp, port, etc with camera and 10-22mm lens the zoom dial gears would slip. The zoom would hardly move in or out. Took it apart and reassembled it and had the same thing. It is the two plastic gears inside the housing that slip. Looks like the gears would get stripped out very easily if this continued. I took the camera out and put plastic sleeve and port back on the housing. When I leave the back of housing off and put slight resistance on the sleeve the gears again slip. Is this common? Don't believe those gears will last long. Also, even without anything in the housing those gears don't mesh very tight.

Problem with zoom 10-22mm Canon Ilelite

As per the Ikelite web site on this lens: "Requires #5509.28 special zoom and clamp set" because of the larger diameter 10-22 lens.

Have the special clamp set. If you read my post the problem is not with the clamp set or the plastic sleeve. Gears inside the housing are what is slipping. Enven without the camera and lens in the housing the black plastic grars slip with only slight resistance on the sleeve. Gears do not mesh tight.

I will guess you are doing this "test" without installing a port since I doubt if the bevel gear is skipping on its mating gear. Port provides the rigidity to the sleeve.

Fowlplay,
As Ike mentioned in his second post, check both the inside bevel gear is tight on the "flat" part of the control shaft and the gear it meshes with is snug, too.
As a last resort check the outer knob set screw hasn't come loose. There is a fine line between making the inside bevel gear and control sleeve gear too tight. Once water pressure pushes the knob against the outside control bulkhead the inside gears should mesh OK.
Hope this helps!

Ike:
Again, as the first post says put port and sleeve on without the camera. With slight resistance on the sleeve the gears inside the housing slip. Not the gear that matches up with the plastice sleeve, but the two gears inside the housing that make the 90 degree connection. Will check the screw tonight. Gears do not mesh tightly. Did not try to tighten the knob. Will do so when I get home this evening.
DHaas:
You are referring to the right two gears. These two gears are not tightly meshed and slip.
Thanks for the suggestions.
