Camera/Housing Carrying Cases

  1. I am new to digital still uw photography. Any thoughts on carrying the stuff around? Does one need a waterproof (Pelican-type) case.? I do most of my diving from liveaboards. Is it possible to get something not excessively large to lug around both the housing and camera/lens. Is this not the way to go? Any thoughts on size, manufacturer of case? I have Canon 20D, 17-85, 10-22 and 100 macro. Ike 125 strobe, 8"port, flat port and arms with Aquatica housing. Any input would be appreciated.

  2. Ira - I don't want to hijack your post, but I follwed Alto's listing of relevant topics to:

One of our Seacam shooters had his housing stolen in San Juan as well, just as in the post above. I'm wondering if this is an ongoing problem or isolated incidents? Anyone else had problems with bags being ransacked in San Juan?

  3. Alto:

Thanks. I wasn't smart enough to do a search first.

I'm going to Dominica this summer via San Juan. I've heard enough horror stories regarding the San Juan airport. This is what I'm planning on doing, regardless of how much of a pain in the posterior it is. <_<

I'm going to carry on the Pelican case w/ my Aquatica housing, ports, strobes, etc. I'm carrying the camera/lenses in a backpack with a laptop computer. I'm spending the night in San Juan each way so I can claim my bags from the airport and ensure I make all connections.

I know this is going to be difficult and add more expense to my trip, but it seems that an ounce of prevention isn't enough in this case, so I'm going to use a pound or two.

As a little aside, I find it odd that when checking in, the airlines/TSA accost you about the whereabouts of your luggage and ensuring your responsibility for them up to that point. However, once they take the bags from you neither the airlines, airports, or security are responsible for them. Each entity has a convenient entity to blame for the loss/damage to your bags and/or their contents. It'd almost be worth looking into sending your valuables to your destination via FedEx.
