Question about file size with D2X

9 posts
  1. When I open my jpg images into Photo Shop I notice a difference in the resolution between my D2X compared to my S2Pro.

The S2 Pro images are almost the same size as the D2X, 4288 x 2848 pixel dimensions. The document size is 59.111 x 39.556 inches at 72 pixel/inches.

    The D2X open in Photo Shop as a document size of 14.293 x 9.493 at 300 pixel/ inches ?

I’m a little confused why they open at 300 pixel/ inches and not 72 ?

  2. Some cameras let you set the DPI in-camera. I think you can switch between 72 and 300 - you could do that on the Kodak.

    It's just a tag really.

    Cheers

  3. Hi James,

I’ve been looking through my manual with no success yet were the option is for dpi.

What would be the benefit to shoot at a higher dpi and a smaller image size, verses a lower dpi and larger image size ? I’m looking to make the largest prints possible.

    Thanks for the reply,

    Marc

Umm...DPI...doesn't really mean anything...in terms of file size...

You just adjust the image to the size you want (and interpolate if necessary) in Photoshop (or other) before printing...

  5. Hi Marc,

Perhaps you might find this article on photo.net useful in understanding the relationship between DPI and file size...

  6. DPI alone has no effect on file size. When you think of image size, you should be thinking in two different ways:

    1) pixel size

    2) dpi and image size, combined. multiply dpi and image dimensions (in inches, centimeters, whatever), and you get #1.

  7. I called Nikon today and they told me the output dpi for my D2X into Photo Shop should be 72 dpi.

My problem lies with in Photo Shop. I tried importing my files directly from my compact flash reader to different versions of Photo Shop. Version 5.5 imported the images correctly at 72 dpi. Both versions 7 and 8 changed the dpi to 300 and the image size to 9x14.

I have tried to change the preferences in Photo Shop with out any luck. Edit/Preferences/File Handling as not change the import file to 72 dpi. Is their any other changes I could make in Photo Shop that might make the effective change I need ?

Is their anyone else using version 8 that has a D2X with the same problem ?

    PS

My original topic should have read... Question about image size with D2x, not file size.

  8. In Photoshop, you can set in preferences the resolution that you want for imported files, 72 is the apparent default on CS but you can change it easily.

  9. My question is why do you want to change it to 72? All prints and magazine contributions etc should be done at 300..
