Nexus for D2x

  1. Hi all,

I finally made my decision to join the digital photography revolution and bought a D2x, together with some more memory and a new hard drive for my computer, of course, not to speak on those expensive 4gb compact flash cards.

Now, for the housing options. I know that Subal is great, and a lot of people have it, but I wanted to check other options. Nexus is (slowly) shipping, but I am not in a terrible hurry. In researching about Nexus, surprisingly I couldn't find a single review of any (even the older) Nexus housing, only descriptions of features, etc. but I am not interested in that, I am interested in real user feedback.

So my question is, does anybody have a Nexus D2x housing and can tell us something about it? If not, can anybody with a Nexus either for the D70 or D100 tell me something about the housing, port system, etc?

    Thanks!

  2. I am using the Nexus D70. Here was my initial review:

    Nexus D70 review

Nexus makes a very compact and well made housing. All camera controls can be accessed easily.

That being said, I recently decided to keep my D70 for quite awhile, so I ordered a Subal housing for it because of the magnified viewfinder. The D70 is a better camera than I am photographer :-). I will put my Nexus up for sale in the next few weeks.

  3. I have the Nexus D100, and love it. It has been bulletproof thus far, and ergonomically it is great. It is also smaller/more compact than most other housings.

The ports are of the screw in type and form a very solid connection. Here are most of the port selections: http://www.usanexus.com/ports_lens.html. I have heard that there are some new glass ports designed specifically for the 18-70 and the 12-24, but I haven't been able to get any info on them yet.

The "multi-port" system allows you to mix-match some of the pieces to support other macro lenses, for example if you have the 70-180, just remove an extension and it supports the 105.

The D2X version looks awesome. I am so tempted to get one, but I figure I want two bodies, so we are talking a mere $13K. I think I'll stick with my D100 a bit longer... :-)

  4. You may want to contact Woody Mayhew woody@nexusamerica.com I believe he will be receiving his first (read: personal) D2x housing on Monday. He can give you good recommendations.

  5. Hi Luiz-

I have two Nexus d70 housings and love both of them. The feature that sold me is the multiport that allows MF and AF with a 105mm lens as well as the capability to use Inons z22 ring flash. I also prefer the way the shutter speed and aperture controls function on this housing as opposed to my Ikelite d70 housing.

Currently, Ryan at Reef photo is outfitting one of these housings with Heinrichs iTTL controller. Ryan has adapted their controller with special connectors to utilize within the Nexus housing.

Woody will definately have his d2x housing soon. I spoke with him the other day.

  6. I have a nice, shiny, new Nexus housing for the D2 camera. It is large because it houses a large camera. Weighs six pounds, and uses the Nexus F4 Pro housing's size ports. There is also a model available which will use the N90 Master housing's size ports (N90 Master, F-100, D-100, D-70 housings use this size port as well). Two models are available to ease the upgrade process from earlier Nexus housings so all of whichever size ports the upgrader has will work with their new housing. Most of the features available on the earlier Nexus housings are present on this one as well - two Nikonos type synch ports, optical eye piece on housing back and a screw-in piece for the camera to allow corner-to-corner viewing of viewfinder image with added eye relief of a mask. It seems like it will be a super rig, doing all I want it to do untderwater. I will use two Inon strobes and Ultra Light arms with it, shooting on manual exposure, as I have been doing with my Nexus D-100 housing until a usable TTL solution comes along. They are starting to ship the D2 housings to me now but the quantities will be limited for a while. I expect to get more of both sizes so, with more F4 size port models before I see many of the Master size port model.

  7. Hi Woody,

It would be great if you could send us some photos or post a few here.

    Thanks

Here are a couple of images of the Nexus D2 housing.

  9. hey Woody, Thats one sweet looking housing.... I need to come over sometime

this week to pick up some more arms and goodies...

Don't let me forget to ask you to show me this in person..

  10. If they'd have just sent them to me...

  11. I reminded them. Again.

  12. I think Nexus makes the best value in housings around. That said, I noticed in the new UWP magazine that the Nexus D2x housing has FIVE clamps to close the housing. What is with that?

  13. Soo what does the Nexus cost pray tell?

  14. I looked at Nexus housing today at Thailand Dive Expo show. I did not have my Subal to compare side by side with the Nexus but from the look of it, Nexus appeared bigger (taller but not quite as deep, I don't have the exact measurement, it could all be just an illusion from Nexu more straight vs Subal's curved look). Subal has 2 clamps vs Nexus's 5 (and I thought my Sea and Sea D70 with 4 clamps was bad enough). However with the GS viewfinder, the Subal is a good 2K more than the Nexus  Ports for 10.5mm, 12-24mm,60mm and 70-180mm lens came out about the same for either system. My buddies will get their Nexuses (Nexi?) wet in a couple of week and it will also be my first time trying out the Subal. Should be an interesting comparison.

Over here, Subal is just shy o f$US5000 (without GS Viewfinder) vs a tad over $US3800 for the Nexus.

  15. I have always liked Nexus housings. It looks more compact than the Subal, but the shading for the LCD screen does not look as good.

  16. Price for Nexus D2 housing body is $3742.00 for either of the two models that will be available.

One model will accept F4 size ports and one model will accept Master size ports. Two models will be available to ease the shock of upgrading for owners of earlier Nexus housings. Nexus has previously made two sizes of ports - the F4/F4 Pro housings have a larger diameter threaded port mounting flange and the 8008, N90, N90 Master, F-100, D-100, D-70 housings all use a smaller diameter threaded port mounting flange. So anyone who is currently shooting any Nexus housing can still use all their ports on one or the other model of the D2 housing. I have received a couple of the F4/F4 Pro port mdels already and I expect it will not be long until I begin recieving the Master port models.

The D2 housing does indeed have five latches. It is a big case with a lot of 0-ring to keep sealed and I would rather have one more latch than I need rather than have one too few.
