I need Nikon D70 advice ...

8 posts
  1. After a month of prowling through several forums, Wetpixel being one, I have received a tremendous amount of input regarding my search for a new camera...after looking at non SLR cameras, the Sony V3, the Oly C-8080, and the Canon G6, I finally decided that they all have good points but ultimately will not give me the versatility that i am looking for, as a relatively new ( but eager ) photographer who has spent the past two years fiddling around with a point and shoot and frustrated at the lack of available range...I belive that I have decided on the Nikon D70, and hope that i can pick the original up cheaper, now that everyone is holding their breath waiting for the D70s...

It might be initially awkward to learn how to look into an optical viewfinder instead of the LCD, and parting with the novelty of being able to shoot those little Quick Time Videos of my nephew getting certified will be difficult , but I am finished with producing substandard photos of the amazing things that I see while diving...

I have a Sea and Sea YS90DX that I would like to use if at all possible as I have almost doubled what I originally set out to spend...I am looking at getting a housing that allows for the use of two strobes, figuring that i will be adding a second down the line...I will probably buy the camera body with the 18-70mm lens, ( seems like a good lens to start with and later I can add the 12-24 WA and the 105 Macro, or at least it has been suggested...)

So here is the question...Do I go with the Ikelite housing, or throw down the extra 500 bucks and get the Aquatica set up?? ( the Aquatica D70) I see both mentioned frequently in here, and know that our community tends to practice alot of "brand loyalty" and since I have no working knowledge of either I would love some input...will the Sea and Sea strobe be OK in conjunction with a modeling light ...do I need to exchange my current set up Ultralight Arms for the boyant arms?..since the Ultralight set-up is new in box, the dealer that I am working with is letting me trade them across for what I need to close the deal , so I can replace them without alot of additional expense if needed...

Do I need to spring for a couple of 1GB cards, or will a couple of 512MB get me started?

What I heard is that ...with the Aquatica, I can buy one dome( which I am told is the correct port for the 18-70mm lens) and later add one macro port, and then just add extension rings and zoom gears as needed depending on which lenses I buy next...whereas the Ikelite might require not only the extension rings but potentially different domes depending on which lens I have...spend a little more now but save in the long run?

Also, I understand that the Aquatica housing is rated tp a greater depth (I have not proceeded to trimix yet but it is on my calendar and then I might exceed that 200 ft. barrier). I also heard that the buttons and controls of the Aquatica are , for lack of a better word, more sturdy and solid. Also, that fogging is less likely in a aluminum housing because aluminum conducts heat whereas polycarbonate insulates it...and finally, that polycarbonate contracts under pressure at depth, (regular use at 100 feet or more ) therefore creating stress on the housing ,superficial cracks and a general ageing .

OK, so that's what I heard... and have come to you guys for your sage advice (pro and con) so that I will wind up with a product that I will be happy with, and that will grow with me as I gain experience...I will look forward to your responses...thanks...Kyle

  2. If you are considering a d70 I would also look at Nexus... I previously owned the Ike housing and looked at Aquatica and Nexus.. If you want to use the 105mm the mutliport for Nexus is a very nice setup...

  3. As a former Ikelite user, and now an Aquatica user with the D70 i would suggest Aquatica. The 8 inch port is great, i have one extension ring that i use with both the 12-24 and 105 that fits with both dome and flat ports.

I am very pleased with the housing, if you plan on being a deep diver then yes Aquatica is the way, i did have issues with my Ikelite at +150ft in the past.

Sounds to me like you have pretty much convinced yourself on Aquatica, i use mine almost daily and quite like it. Gears etc much more solid on the Aquatica, had to replace ikelite ones on occasion. ALso the cracks you hear when descending always gave me the jitters...

FOr your arms, the Ultralights are certainly compatable. Same size ball as the Aquatica/TLC arms so the fittings for your handles will be the right fit. NO need to go to the bouyant ones if you ask me unless you want it to float some more.

I would suggest 1 GB cards, i shoot RAW (as you should) and get 100 shots on a 1GB card, thats the minimum for underwater if you ask me.

Make sure when you order to tell them you want two strobe bulkheads and mounts.

    Cheers

    Mike

  4. The following is strictly MY OPINION:

If I had to choose between the 2 that you mentioned, I would choose the Ikelite. There was an Aquatica D70 on a trip I took in December and in less than one week the paint was peeling / chipping and the threads came out of one of the handles. Was this just an isolated incidence....I can't say! If I were you and could afford a few $100 more, I would go with a Nexus or Subal. Both housings are smaller and better made (IMHO) than the Aquatica.

I recommend shooting in RAW so you need at least a 1GB card. You will get at least 100 RAW images per GB.

I am pretty sure with the Nexus & Ikelite housings, a +4 diopter is recommended / needed when using the 18-70 lens.

Sorry if I stepped on anyones toes.

  5. If $$$ are a concern as you express, I don't think you need to consider anything else beyond the Ikelite. This will get you going with an excellent housing and dome port for your 18-70 lens. The 18-70 is very nice underwater, and will give you a range similar to what you are used with with your P&S systems. Add the 60mm after that with a flat port for a good macro solution. You don't need bouyant arms, the system will not be very heavy UW.

Keep it simple, and have fun with the new system!

  6. I have a D70 in an Ikelite housing and it's a great housing. It's a big improvement of the previous Ikelite housing I had for my 35mm camera.

I have a S&S YS120 Duo and I use this in manual mode connected with a replacement Ikelite cord. A few more power settings would be great but I don't find it a great problem and take most shots with the strobe set on 1/2 power. I use a second strobe on TTL slave mode but wired would be better. An Ikelite cord is available to connect 2 S&S strobes to an Ikelite housing.

  7. DBH,

I just noticed in your reply that you had a problem with the Aquatica housing... if that happened to me on a trip I would be really unhappy , just out of couriosity, did you take this problem back to the Aquatica customer service department, and if so, did they step up to the occasion or let you down, I know that they are out of the country, Canada I think, and sometimes that complicates things when you need a repair or customer service...but I have heard that they are pretty responsive to issues, i hope you were able to resolve the problem, though I can certainly understand why an incidcent like that would move them to a lower position on your preference list...as I am still shopping, it gives me a concern or two -take care - Kyle
