Ikelite #5509.28 special zoom and clamp set?

12 posts
  1. I recently purchased the 8" dome port and Canon 10-22mm. The clamp I have from the #5503 is a bit snug on the lens but works. I'm curious what the difference is with the #5509.28 special zoom and clamp set (i.e., is it just a bit larger?).

Also, the chart on the Ikelite site doesn't say that the 8" port works with the Sigma 15mm FE, although I believe that it does, per previous threads on this site. Am I correct?

And one last question: How are some of you handling the extra weight needed on the housing due to the air volume under the dome (as far as placement and attachment)?

Okay I lied ... here's the last question: Are most using a shade on this port?

    Thanks.

  2. The 8" works with my D70 and 15mm....while using the large dome, I zip tied a 2lb weight to the bottom of my tray...on my next trip I'm considering an ankle weight around the port extention....made it barely negative.....I didn't use a shade on my first trip with this dome, but I now have a Fisheye shade....I mainly wanted it for topside protection....I never had problems with flare, etc.

  3. Thanks, Karl. And great idea about the ankle weight! I might have to try that.

BTW, very nice shots on your site.

  4. Thanks Ellen  ....you'll love your rig underwater :)

  5. With my Sea & Sea rig, when using a dome port w/ extension ring I attach an ankle weight around the extension ring - stays out of the way and makes the rig neutral. The housing still wants to rotate onto the back/dome up if set down, which is fine by me.

  6. I would be afraid (be very afraid) that the ankle weight would pull the port off of the Ikelite housing. It only has two clips that hold the port in place. It is not designed for that kind of load out of the water.

The Sea and Sea and Aquatica bayonet ports are different.

    Cheers

  7. Hmmm, good point about the load of the ankle weight on the port. What do you normally do with the weight, James?

Also, do you know the answer to the question about the clamp? Or Ike, are you around?

    Thanks.

  8. I use a port shade on the 8" port only because I think it will help keep the damage

to a minimum from banging around on the boat and in the water....

Too many times have I ended up smaking a rock with my video camera, so I decided

to get the port shade... and I just noticed that others may have felt the same way

as B&H had a few new and a few used ones that are all gone this week....

Also of note is that there is a lens port shade cover to go with the shade... get one

while you can.... here's the site.

  9. I agree with Dixter, the dome shade I use is in a sorry state and can only imagine the number of time I would have damaged the port if not for this added protector, the neoprene cover is a standard Aquatica product, meaning always available, same as the shades, there is two models, one is for fisheyes lenses and should be used if you go with the Aquatica conversion dome that allow's the 10.5mm fisheye or any full frame fisheye, the other is the WA version, it's got more meat around and thus provide more protection in cases where the fisheyes lenses are not involved. the nice thing about these shades is they allow the housing to be put down face first on a table allowing access to the back of the camera without having the $$$ dome $$$ to be in contact with that nasty anti skid surface! the neoprene cover is the added inexpensive travel insurance for your dome.

  10. The housing still wants to rotate onto the back/dome up if set down, which is fine by me.

Sounds like a good silent reminder to shoot up!

    Viz'art,

What is the availability of the Aquatica version? How about extension rings for the 12-24 and 18-70?

What is the difference that would make me go with one or the other? (besides that the Aquatica supports the 10.5mm now. )

So for if using the 8" dome with the EF-S10-22mm, the port shade of choice will be the Aquatica WA version, am I right??

Just found out the answer to the question above (bought the set and it just came in the mail). So, if anyone else is wondering: Yes, it's very slightly larger.
