My D2X housing

  1. I thought I ‘d show off my housing and let you all know that I have a good opportunity and need a lot of cash fast. So I’ll be selling this housing along with my D2X. It’ not a problem for me as I still have my S2 Pro and u/w housing I made. I’ll get another camera in a couple of months and make another housing. If anyone is interested before I list it on E Bay e-mail me for the particulars. Blueseas@earthlink.net

  2. I believe we met at the Ocean Fest show. Nice job on the housing, I've seen many home made housings over the years, but this is some of the finest home craftsmanship I've seen.

  3. I think Marc used to make video housings professionally - his stuff looks pretty nice.

Might be an alternative for folks who have the D2x but not the budget for a $5,000 housing.

Add the fact that you can add an 8" Aquatica dome to Marc's housing and it's looking really good.

    Cheers

  4. I lucked out and I won’t have to sell my D2X or my new housing I made.

I’m really excited about using this combination underwater.

Lately water conditions have not been favorable for beach diving so I’ve been practicing in my pool. So far I’m impressed with the results, colors are rich and the detail is superb.

It’s a whole new experience not having TTL but I’m sure I’ll get the hang of it with practice. My most resent e-mail reply from Subtronic says they will have a iTTL flash available for the D2x by the end of June, hopefully I won’t need to buy one.

Thanks for the kind words about my housing and for the private enquiries.

  5. Howdy, Marc. If you really miss TTL, I have been very pleased using a housed strobe (D100 with SB80 and D70 with SB800). I shoot mostly fish ID and macro, where the TTL works extremely well in my experience.

Dave Marsh at UW Photo Tech has sold me two Subal strobe housings, and I imagine he would love to ship some more!

  6. I'm sure Marc will make his own...if he can figure out the wiring...:-) He's quite handy w/ this stuff.

  7. Hi Jim,

Thanks for the tip, I called Dave and he sold me a Nikonous bulkhead connector.

This is exactly what I was looking for when James and I were trying to make a SB 28 flash housing. This was about 2 years ago and I was having a problem finding a five wire sync cord that could connect to a Ikelite bulkhead connector. With this Nikonous connector I should be able to connect directly to my housing and have iTTl with a SB 800 flash, which I already own. I’ll be using a standard Nikonous sync cord from a Sb 105 flash unit.

You said that you bought two flash housings for your D100, are you using both in TTL mode ?

From reading all the resent post about using two Sb 800's at the same time it looks like it’s not really possible with the D2X ? When I mentioned this to Dave he said it was possible and some people were have success using two ? Maybe I miss interpret what he was saying and he meant with the D100 ? Anyway I’ll be giving it a try with at least one unit. I’m really not sure it will be powerful enough, I’m sure two units would work much better.

Here is a picture of the flash housing I made. I’ll be connecting the new bulkhead connector to it and hopefully it will work properly ?

  8. I received my bulkhead connector from Dave over at Underwater Photo Tech . After I mounted and wired it to my existing housing using a standard Nikonous sync cord, it worked perfectly in iTTL mode.

I would say it does not have enough coverage for wide angle but works excellent with my 90 mm Tamrom macro.

I updated my original posted picture to include the new flash housing.

Thanks again for the tip Jim,

  9. Marc,

Is there a way that you can do wireless multiple flash underwater? From what I understand, the Nikon Speedlights (SB800) can trip other SB800's wirelessly and they will all work in iTTL. Perhaps if you put a window in your flash housing over the slave sensor on the flash?

From what I understand, the wireless multi-flash features of the D2x and SB800 are incredible. I bet it will work underwater now - whereas it most certainly did NOT work with the D-TTL system.

    Cheers

  10. Hi James,

What do you think about using a fiber optical cable ?

  11. Hi guys, I just got back to this topic. When I mentioned that Dave Marsh had sold me two Subal strobe housings, I didn't mean that I'm using two strobes. I used the Subal housing with an SB80 for my D100, and I now use a Subal housing with an SB800 with my D70. The two Subal housings are identical except that Nikon cleverly moved the buttons a few millimeters to force us to buy a new housing for the SB800 (actually, you could put an SB800 in a Subal SB80 housing, but you would have to turn it on before sealing the housing).

Whatever. The D100/SB80 and D70/SB800 combination works extremely well underwater for fish ID, close-up, and macro photography. My TTL exposures are usually dead solid perfect. I don't do WA, so I don't know how well the SB80/SB800 would work for that.

And if you're interested, I have a virtually new Subal SB80 housing for sale.

    Jim
