I'm about to try the DC300 for the first time, with my S45. The housing has no diffuser; are there any steps that can be taken to diffuse the internal flash??

You can stick some semi blocked plastic part on the housing or inside of it.
I done it once with a piece of plastic from a small bag that I put inside the housing and some sellotape.
Another option that a friend of mine done with other housing is to attach a semi blocked plastic with a shape of 'L' to the screw hole in the bottom of the housing.
I've been using the S40 with that housing for a few years now without using a diffuser and get good shots: http://pictures.care2.com/welcome/103817454
