Help with a few fish and coral from Yap

6 posts
  1. Am in the midst of submitting some shots to my agency and need to use common and latin names for each photo, unfortunately am having trouble with a few.

Hopefully someone here can help, i am using the Myers Micronesian Reef Fish book as well as the Humann et al. Tropical Reef fish book but am stumped as can't find a match

i am thinking the first may be a Jewel Damsel, Plectroglyphidodon lacrymatus blue spots are right but the colour seems wrong

The Blenny...no idea but maybe the blue chin means something?

The snapper, maybe not a snapper?

    The coral, perhaps Pachyseris speciosa?

    Thanks in advance

    Mike

  2. Hi Mike,

Can't help w/ the fish, but the coral is definitely a Pachyseris sp. With this type of small polyped scleractinian, it's almost impossible to ID it to the species level. I think the common name is Elephant Skin coral.

  3. 3rd Fish looks like a cardinal fish to me. Alex

  4. I believe the blenny is Nannosalarias nativitatis which I've called a throat spot blenny, but looking at fishbase it has several common names.

  5. Thanks for the help folks,

James, i will just go with the sp. i think, thanks for concurring on my guess

Alex, i think you are right about the cardinalfish, guess the big nasty teeth threw me off, think it is the Singapore Cardinalfish now, Cheilodipterus singapurensis

Still working on the blenny as i can find no info on a nativitatis but have found a Rhabdoblennius ellipes that might be it

    Thanks again

    Mike

  6. Mike - using Randall, Allen & Steene the blenny does match Nannosalarias nativitatis (throatspot blenny) and the cardinal seems to be Apogon doderleini (Doderlein's cardinalfish). All of the pictures I've found of Plectroglyphidodon lacrymatus show dark fish with blue spots and none of the description mention an alternative color phase.
