iPod picture storage

Anyone using an iPod Photo and the iPod camera connector ?

Sounded like a good idea to me so I have just baught both and cannot get pictures to transfer from my D70.

I have enabled photo transfer on the iPod, when I select Photo Import I would have expected the D70 to go into 'transfer' mode similar to connection to a PC.

Chief suspect is the iPod Camera connector itself - anyone care to confirm the behaviour - at what point during connection does the camera recognize that a data transfer device has been attached ?

Issue resolved - Apple supplied software V1.0 on the iPod - it needed V1.1 to support the Camera Connector.

In some ways I would have expected the thing to work 'straight out of the box' as it was ordered with the connector etc.

After a 50MB download ( thanks to ADSL here at work ) it all worked.

Paul, my understanding is that this device will only transfer at USB 1 speed. It would take an awfully long time to download a 1GB card this way...

Have you figured out some magic solution?

No it seems to be USB2 - transfer speed while not startling is fine. There is also a Firewire option but my Nikon is USB.

I think that the early iPod devices may have been USB1 only.

So you're actually getting the Nikon to transfer @ USB2 to the ipod?? I thought the D70 itself was also limited to 1.1.

How long does it take you to download a 1GB card from the camera?

Look forward to hearing how you go. I think this storage thing is something that it would be good to work out. There are so many options out there.

OK, I copied 57 RAW files onto the camera, the card was currently empty so I had to add some.

The images totaled 307 MB which transferred to the iPod in 9 minutes.

So she is not the quickest solution but on that live aboard in the middle of whoknowswhereweare it still looks good to me, I will just drink a coffee or lay in the sun.

Speed somewhere in the chain is USB1 - the iPod ? I think maybe that you are correct and that it is USB1.

Bonus is you get music also - and with 60GB of storage it is not going to fill up that fast.

The music option is definately very appealing and the navigation wheel interface on the ipods is superb. I like you idea of drinking coffee in the sun

In case other people are reading this and have yet to get a storage device, I have been looking at the VP6300 from Vosonic which displays RAW files (including Nikon NEFs with a firmware upgrade), plays mp3s and has a slot for almost all storage media. It proportedly transfers a 1GB card in 7 minutes.

It is no-where near as sexy as the ipod, but it might be another option for people?
