Can anyone confirm (uw experience!) that the D70S absolutely fits in the Ike D70 housing? It would be okay if it weren't bug-for-bug compatible (no tray slippage)...
Considering either a D70S or a second D70 as a backup body. A new D70S is only a couple hundred more than a used (mint) D70. Comments appreciated.
Cheers,
Chris
Chris....the Ikelite website lists the same housing for both cameras......I highly recommend a second body....might as well get the newest one

Chris, the D70 & D70s physical are the same, and it fits the Aquatica perfectly, the Aquatica having a snug fit, the Ikelite, having a looser internal environnement, should be the same.

Okay, sounds good...now a follow-up:
Any speculation about which'd be preferred:
A second D70, identical to my current camera
or
A slightly more "up to date", slightly different, slightly more expensive D70S
???
I need to decide in time to order for my July 15 trip to Malpelo and Cocos!
Put out the extra cash, the S version is improvement, slight but nonetheless improvement.
Always go for the update.
If you get the update, there are two possible results; new features are valuable to you or new features aren't valuable to you.
If the new features are of now value, you are no worse off, other than a few bucks (don't forget increased resale value of the newer model).
If the new features are valuable, then you are far ahead. You will now only use the D70 for backup.
From what I understand the lcd is slightly bigger but all the internal workings of the camera are the same. If you download the firmware 2.0 parts a and b you will have the same internal workings of the camera. They have not changed the autofocus mechanism or anything else for that matter. Except for the viewfinder and a couple of other minor details. This is according to dpreview... btw the firmware update really makes the AF a lot more zippier.

I'll stay with the old D70.
For 200$ the only significant different (as know, maybe Nikon hide others) is the bigger LCD, to me its not worth this money that I can spend on other equipment.
Go with the D70s. The eye cup is slightly larger blocking out more ambient light. The LCD is noticably larger when you compare them side by side. And for me, I really like the cable release.
I bought one of these so I'd have a second body and I really enjoy the modifications.
To answer you original question, Ikelite says in their site that the housing will fit either the D70s or the D70. Here is the link:
I'd go for the D70s, it is easier to review images with the larger viewfinder underwater, especially if you like looking at the histogram at the same time.
Thanks for all the comments. I will think a bit more about the $200 for a NEW camera (worth $100?), a larger LCD ($100?), and eyecup ($50?). May be worth it...and the new d70 firmware should make them handle near-identically.
