Subal S2 Pro help needed!

6 posts
  1. During my first expedition to Africa with the new (to me) Subal and S2 Pro combination, the aperture control fell apart inside the housing. I put it back together so that it works but cannot see how the spring functions so assume I got it wrong.

I sent a photo and question to Subal and also to the UK importer and repairer but while one has yet to answer after 10 days, the other said he had no idea.

So what is the correct order to place the following items on the shaft?

    Circlip (obviously first)

    Spacer

    Spring

Rubber faced wheel with locking grub screw (obviously last)

If you have the Subal housing for S2 Pro, please take a look and tell me what the spring does.

    Thanks.

  2. Please post a photo of the items and the shaft and I should be able to help.

If it's the same as the ND10 Housing then it's spring, gear, rubber faced ring with locking screw. FYI, the locking screw is not tightened down completely and loctite must be used to seal the screw in place. There should be movement (against the spring tension) of the rubber faced ring.

Look at the shutter speed control in the back 1/2 of the housing shell. This control is similar to the aperture control, less the gear.

  3. Thanks. Here is a picture! It seems the grub screw is not totally tightened?

  4. The photo shows what is normally the shutter speed control and it's assembled correctly. E-Ring first, Spring, Black Collar, Rubber Faced Wheel with locking screw. As I mentioned in the post above the locking screw should not be tightened completely. The correct procedure is to put some loctite on the threads of the locking screw, turn it in until it bottoms out and then back off about 1/4 turn.

It's easier to install the rubber faced wheel on the black collar first and align the hole for the locking screw through both. Then install as an assembly with the locking screw in place as well.

  5. Thank you very much indeed for your help. It is amazing that I could get no response from Austria!

(On the S2 Pro in aperture-priority mode this works the f.stop selection.)

  6. Small correction: I had a couple of these on my bench this morning, and took a closer look. The black collar does not need to be attached to the rubber faced wheel first. Just assemble the E-Ring, Spring, Black Collar and Rubber faced wheel and tighten as discussed above.

Arnold at Subal was out all last week and Sigrid is out all this week. They're a very small family operation, emails get a little backed up when one of them is out of the office.
