Options for purchasing a D2X

2 posts
  1. I was hoping someone could help me shake the slime out of the icemaker concerning purchasing cameras.

A couple of years ago, I purchased an S2 out of Canada off Ebay. Warranty was good via Fuji Canada so no problem. At least it did not seem like a problem and the vendor was very forthcoming with answers to my concerns over a "gray market" camera.

Well, I am now pining away for the D2x and of course, the advertised, lower cost D2x kits from most e-tailers are just stripped down kits that are missing items. We have all investigated that bit and know that we have to stick with the reputable dealers when ordering a camera body kit.

What about the D2x kits on ebay. It appears that everything but Capture 4 software comes in the kits shown and they are claiming a USA kit and warranty. Am I missing something here. If anyone has investigated this and knows what's up, I would love for them to share.

    Thanks,

    Mike

  2. Hi Mike,

Two things, first, only Nikon authorized dealers sell equipment with USA warranty. If they are authorized dealers, they should be listed at the Nikon USA site. I have seen many dealers claiming USA warranty, but that only means that you have to return your camera to them, not to Nikon to get it serviced. The only seller that I trust on ebay is Cameta.

One thing to do before purchasing anything on ebay is checking the seller on Reseller Ratings. You have also be aware of the bait technique that many of these shops use. They advertise low price for a camera, but if you don't buy accessories from them, they won't sell you the camera. If you add everything up, in the end you will buy it at the same price as everywhere else, or even more pay more. Also, the lenses that they sell in those kits are the cheaper ones that you can find, usually with bad optical quality.

    I hope this helps,

    Luiz
