Hi newbie to underwater photography and I can’t afford the whole set up so my question is will I be able to take pics with just the housing and get half way decent pictures. Camera is a Nikon e5400 thanks for the info.

Sure you can! its more limited to shot without external strobe but its possible.
In clear water and with objects close to the camera you can get decent picture especially if you put a diffuser on the internal flesh.
Another way to get good shots its by using available light, there a lot of information here in the forum about this issue.
