Sold my Olympus 5050, now where i go?

  1. O.K Its time to move on

I sold my Olymbus 5050 setup. Now i must move on but where?

I am a Nikon fan. My first camera was a Nikon EM and i like to stay with Nikon

Imprtant for me are:Shutter lag, RAW performance & cycle time, RAW continuous mode, sharpness.

I think the winner is Nikon D70s but have the Nikon a AF focus that can follow the object, something like the D2X?

    Lenses is a problem to?

My favorit lenses is the Nikon Af 10,5/2,8DX G ED fish-eye

I know i must learn to see learn to use this lens but i do like to learn

Many will tell me that for my shooting till a 15mm lens will be better

There we have the Sigma AF 15/2,8 Ex Fisheye

The Nikon Af 16/2,8D Fisheye is to expensiv for me

Altenativ is to find a used Nikon AF 17-35mm f/2,8

About housing i love Subals and hugfoot becauce off the size and belive size matters!! Small size matters for me becauce i freedive.

Inexpensive housing is the Ikelite but i havent use one so i dnt know how big or heavy it will be

btw later i will ad some strobes. I like the inons becauce of the size and i think the new INON 200F will be a great strobe

Anyway what are you thinking about all this? Cameras housing Ports....

Dont forget i have not millions on my bankacount.

P.S. ALEX I have still my URPRO filter. Sould I use tape, like you have done, to use it underwater? I like to use it untill the magic filter will arive :-)

  2. Sounds like you already almost figured it out Lambis.

    Subal, D70s, 15FE, 10.5 FE and 200F

Depending on where you live, you might find Hugy ports harder to come by? I can't see the advantage of the Nikon 16FE over the Sigma (unless you can find one for the same price). The 17-35 probably isn't quite as useful as the other lenses you've mentioned, it just isn't that wide on a D70 (26mm). Oh, and by all means, if you can afford a D2X... but then again you wanted small size :)

  3. Yes i almost figured it out. Only i will go with one lens for now I have not the money for 2. It will be Nikon 10.5 or Sigma 15.

Alex have shoot some great pictures off freedivers but i dont remember the lens that he have use I think it was a 16mm

For the beginning i will only buy one port and if i go with Inon 200F must Subal's bulkhead be a nikonos, ikelite or Subtronic?

BTW I live in Europe - Greece and Sweden

  4. Hi Lambis, I just looked at Alex's link with freedivers and it seems like he used a mixture of the 10.5 and 16FE. The 10.5 for a very wide shot with lots of space around the diver and 16 for more full length portrait type shots.

I guess it is really up to you how you want to start. You seem comfortable getting very close to your subjects, so you might do well with a 10.5. Also given that a lot of the reported difficulties with 10.5 are lighting (and you will initially be available light) you might find the 10.5 a good place to start??

  5. I have only photographed freedivers once, so I wouldn't call me an expert on it. But I found the 10.5mm and 16mm an ideal combination. For this reason I would put the Nikons ahead of the Canons for this application.

One point that came out of all the filter tests in the Red Sea was how much easier it is to set a custom white balance on the D70 than on the D100. On the D70 you just press and hold the White Balance button for a second, then just take a photo. For this reason I would go for the D70 above the D100.

I dont know how 10,5 works for full length portrait shots. The 16mm Nikon costs almost the double price off a Nikon 10.5

Anyway, i just have orded the Nikon D70s. It come bundle with a Nikon 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5G ED IF AF-S DX Wide Angle Zoom Lens.

For topside its will be a great lens. I think is 27-105mm 35mm equivalent. Perfect for Photojournalism & Portrait. Not the Best lens but very very cheap.

I just wait now and hope that i find some great subal deal :-)

Alex...just pressing the white Balance button for a second..... Wow its a dream for me. You can't imaging how frustaring it was with the Olympus 5050. I am glad with my choice becauce its time to go and take phots and not "fight" with the camera all the time.

Antony it is true... It's much better down there... It's a better place

  7. News!!

I have decide to go with Subal (If the price is right) I have writen to Steve att oceanoptics and i hope he make a nice price for me.

Hugyfoot housings are great but i have see that tey have not all the controls but on the other side maybe we need not all off them underwater. Ports are not expensive but i dont know what support they have.

Lenses .... i still cant decide. 10.5 or 16mm. I can for now only pursale one lens

The Sigma 15mm is gret in Price buti dont kow how sharp it is if you compare with the nikon 16mm

Like Alex freediver photos i think that both lenses are great but i must go with one first.

BTW I must learn to plan my photo dives now becauce i can not change a lens underwater. This will be great learning curve for me..

  8. You can often pick up the Nikon 16mm 2.8 fisheye used, also ... I got a mint copy here for under $500 and there are several in that price range for auction currently. Also, because it and the 10.5 have almost identical dimensions, ports tend to be useable for both.

    I like this lens.

  9. The Sigma 15mm lens is just as good as the Nikon offering, IMO. I have used both.

    Cheers
