Cool shots Jim....how did you set up the camera?
Karl
I used a Hakuba tripod with an Acratech ball head for support. I shot it with a D70s with the 70-200mm. I upgraded from the D70 to the D70s, mainly because I really wanted the cable release function that is not available on the regular D70.
Once the fireworks started, I concentrated on framing during the first 3 sets. After that, I dialed the shutter speed all the way down to BULB. I started with an apeture of F8, but found that I got huge flares. Next I tried F11, but the fireworks were too dim. Finally I settled on F10, which is what most of those are shot at, and ISO 200. Exposure times are as long as 6 seconds long. I also set manual focus to Infinity.
The technique I used is that as soon as I saw the fireworks go up, I'd hold down the cable release. Once they finished popping or I had counted to 6 seconds in my head, I'd let the cable release go.
After I got the first shot I was happy with, I didn't touch anything else. I just sat back in my chair with the cable release in one hand and a beer in the other.
What is on that page are my favorites from about 160 shots taken during the 30 minute display.
Good job....I really like the first one ![]()

Nice shots Jim, I love all those colors in that black sky, they look great!
I shot at two different fireworks displays. The first one was in Fairlawn, OH and the 2nd was in Akron, Oh.
