Lenses for D70? Confused on ports!

2 posts
  1. Hey, I just registered on wetpixel. I am MPC and live in Nj, USA. So I am saying hello to everyone. :D After 4 years of using my NikonosV I am taking the big leap to Digital!

I have a question which is a shock :) I have a D70 and I am looking to house it, I have made up my mind that I am getting the Ikelite housing and starting off with 1 DS-125 strobe for now , or at least until my credit card cools off. :D

I am a little confused on ports and lenses. I have the 18-70mm lense can I use the 8'' dome with this? Does it need some kind of zoom on it? Also I figure I will be getting a 60mm macro which according to Ikes web-site I can use the 8" dome also, do I get this right or am I missing something? Should I get the 60 or go for the the 105mm to start off with? Can I use the 18-70mm zoom with the same port?

I also see there are flat and dome ports any preface as to which one? I am looking for one that I can use on a couple of lenses to get me started. Hope this is not too confusing because I am!!!

Thanks for all info and advice. Heading down to Key Largo for Labor Day and hoping to have this all set-up by then.

  2. Hi and welcome to Wetpixel.

I recommend you start with 3 lenses, the kit lens, the 60mm macro, and the Sigma 15mm fisheye. You should get a flat port for your macro lens as it's not that expensive. Then for the other two lenses, you can get by with the 8" dome port and two extension rings.

Please read my article about selecting lenses - it's in the Features section here which you can reach from the upper right hand menu.

There is a zoom gear that you "strap" onto your zoom lens, which engages a knob on the housing.
