Nikon 10.5 has port reflections

7 posts
  1. In my first UW adventure using a Ikelite housed Nikon D-100, using the Nikon 10.5 fisheye lens with the Ikelite 6" dome, I noticed a reflection of the lens off the inside of the port.

Pics attached- See the left side.

Would using the larger 8" Ikelite port take care of this annoying problem? If so, will Ikelite make the 8" port adaptable to the Nikon 10.5?

This 10.5 lens was razor sharp and versatile! It is my lens of choice for UW photograhy.

I've not tried my 105 yet, but the 17-35 that did try was good but would not focus close enough.

Thanks to Brett and Ikelite for pushing me in the DSLR direction. What a huge difference!

  2. I suggest using a dioptre (+3 or +4) to solve your focus issues with the 17-35mm.

My 10.5mm lens is covered with black electrical tape to stop reflections of the shiny gold bits!

I can't help the Ike ports. But others will.

  3. The reflections I mentioned are arches conforming to the shape of the lens/port on the left side of the print. Seems to be a glass reflection.

The Ikelite site tells me I won't need a dipoter.

    Hmmmm.

  4. I've never had a reflection issue with my 10.5mm....can't help on this one....presently, the Ikelite 8" dome will not work with the 10.5mm, but I've heard that they are workling on it.....the small dome is very sharp, so I'm not sure there's much to be gained except to eliminate carrying the small dome around :D:)

  5. I think that Ike and Chris White where replay for this issue in the past.

A reflection like you describe its probably from light that is strike the dome directly.

I have no experience with the 10.5 (hope I'll have it in the near future :D ) but I had an almost similar situation when I aimed the strobe directly to my dome port, I assumed that the fish-eye is more sensitive for that since its have much wider perspective.

  6. I have got reflections with my Subal in the past and have seen it on other manufacturers too. Don't think it is an ikelite problem - more likely caused by camera angle or strobe positioning causing internal reflections. Alex

  7. I had the same issue with my 10.5 and 6" dome. It was the strobe-position.

It took me quit some dives to figure out what the problem was, and another dozen of dives to have the strobes positioned correctly. I had to make some diffusers for my strobes to cover the area when focussing close with the 10.5.

I used to work with an slaveadapter for my second strobe, but with the 10.5 you have to put the strobe close and behind the camera and point outwards. In this position the slave sensor will not see the flash anymore, so the second strobe will not fire. Finally I invested in a dual synccord.

The 10.5 is a fantastic piece, but it demands some effort.
