How do I get the cover off the back of the dome port? It appears like it is threaded and turns 360 degrees, but obviously it is not. How do I pull it off?
Never mind. It was just stuck. First rule of engineering; if it's stuck, force it...if it breatks, it needed replacing anyway.
That rear dome cover is the biggest pain in the rear to remove. It's difficult to get a good grip on it because of its low profile. I ended up drilling two small holes in mine through which I threaded a small piece of rope to create a handle. It is much easier to remove the cover now.
I just got a large new dome port- No cover front or back which cover are you refering to??Mark
We normally drill a small vent hole in the Subal rear port caps. For the DP-FE2 port we sometimes place a small handle (hardware store) onto the rear port cap to ease it's removal.
The Subal port caps are optional accessories, they don't come with the port unless ordered separately.
I agree. It's a pain. Once I had finally managed to prise mine off, I marked with a permanent marker an arrow on the cover to show the position the mark needs to be for the locking lugs to be disengaged.
Drilling a couple of holes and putting a chord thborugh them is a great idea!
Hello,
I bought a strap wrench for about 6 bucks which works like a charm. Even brought it with me to Fiji a few weeks ago.
I'd never heard of a strap wrench before this.
edit: this was for ikes 8-inch dome. Not sure if this would work on the subal.

I had the same problem with my FE2. I asked Mr Stepanic from Subal and he said to remove the o-ring before putting the cap on and it goes on/off very easily now. I just keep a little zip-loc bag with my kit, put the o-ring in that then put the bag inside the dome port to keep any residual silicone grease from the o-ring off the glass.
Simple, but it works great.

Doh!
Thanks for that Marty - and Mr S. What a complete no-brainer. I always keep my Subal housing o-ring in a ziplock inside the housing when travelling. Why didn't I think of it for the port??
