New S2 Pro and Ikelite User

  1. I just made the plunge and bought an S2 Pro and an Ikelite housing. I am jumping into it from a Nikonos V system. I will use my dual SB 105's and TLC strobe arms. My only previous experience with digital was an early Nikon Coolpix 600. Fortunately, the functions and controls on the S2 are similar to my N90s (sold immediately after purchasing the S2) that I had planned to house, therefore the transition was fairly easy.

I am interested in opinions on a couple matters before I make my first trip in November. I will be using a Nikon 60mm micro lens.

    1) What resolution and quality would you recomend?

    2) Does the sensitivity setting correlate accurately with ISO film settings?

    Thanks for any advice offered.

  2. Hi Scott,

Let me start by saying congrats! You've got a great system!

If you hang in there just a little longer, I have submitted my "S2 Lessons Learned" to be published here on Wetpixel. I don't want to give away the farm - but let me say, you can shorten your "learning curve" by about 4 dives if you read my lessons!

Yes, the sensitivity correlates well with Film. You will want to shoot at the lowest ISO of 100. With the 60mm micro you will have no need or reason to shoot at higher ISO's (can't exactly shoot wrecks w/ that lens eh?).

I would shoot one dive in JPEG and the next in RAW on a "pooltest" before you go on your first trip in November. Then you can get familiar with using the Qimage Pro RAW converter or the Fuji Hyperutility EX.

  3. Thanks James, that's good info. I can't wait to see your lessons when you post them. It's funny that you mention using the ISO 100 setting. The S2's capability of ISO 100 was a contributing factor that helped sway me toward it, being a long time Nikon person and generally used to using 100 or slower.
