Subal D2X housing flash connections

5 posts
  1. I just received my Subal housing for my D2X. I had Subal install Ike synch sockets. In the housing there are connectors for each synch socket that allow you to use 3 pins (manual mode) or 5 pins (TTL mode). I plan on using the housing with my Ike DS 50 and DS 125 strobes. I would like to use them with the manual strobe connector. The Ike manual strobe connector is suppose to be used with the strobe in the TTL mode.

Should I set up the housing to use 3 pins or 5 pins (TTL mode)??

The Subal manual warns that the TTL mode (5 pins) should only be used with Nikon digital strobes. That using it with other non-digital TTL strobes may destroy the camera's electronics. It says to consult the Strobes manufacture.

Would there be any problem in using the strobes in the manual (3 pin) mode?

Lastly one of my ULCS base plates won't secure to the housing because the screw holes are too close together. Does anyone have a way around this or does a specific base plate for the D2X housing exist?

Thanks for any advice or experiences that might be useful.

    Dave

  2. I would check with Ikelite to see if their Ikelite-Ikelite sync cord is wired for 5 pins or only 2 pins.

Personally I use DS-125 with Ikelite to Nikonos Y-sync cord which only has 2 wires (or is it 3?) connected. I usually connected it to bulkhead on the left (looking from the rear of the housing) which has all 5 pins connected with no problem whatsoever.

  3. Hi Dave, I think Ikelite's manual controller has only three wires, but just to be safe, I would also switch the connector in the housing for three wires. The only strobe that works in iTTL with the 5 pins connected in the housing is a housed SB-800. Since this will not be the case, I would switch the connector in the housing to 3 pins.

I use mine with two Ikelite strobes (SS200 and 100a with regular 5 pin TTL cords) with the 3 pin connector in the housing and had no problems.

  4. Use the 3 Pin connector. In some cases (Sea & Sea, Subtronic & Inon strobes) we also have removed the Ready Light pin from the hot shoe connector, but I have not seen any issues with Ike strobes yet. If you experience any bizzare problems once the strobes are connected (and submerged) then remove the ready light pin from the hot shoe. In fact I generally only leave the X-Sync & Ground pins just to be sure.

For the strobe base plate ULCS makes a version of them specifically for Subal Housings.

  5. Thanks to all. As far as the base plate I hate admit it but I was try to put a base plate for a Nikonos tray on the housing. The correct UCLS base plate works fine.
