Black Sea Bass

  1. Saw these two Black Sea Bass at Cathedral Cove, Anacapa Island. They were each about 5 to 6 feet long. I'd estimate about 300 to 350 lb.

Shot this with the Nikon 10.5DX. Through about 20 ft. of hazy water. Not a great shot, but it was a great dive.

  2. Dave,

To me, that's a great shot - just to see two healthy black seabass. The one on the right looks pregnant even.

    Very cool.

  3. Dave,

The 10.5 is an amazing lens isn't it? Here is a shot with my Sigma 14. This one was not so healthy. Something, probably a fishing line, ripped its entire gill plate off. I hear it's still around. This was shot about two years ago. Catalina Island has a spot where you can usually encounter 4-5 of them each dive...until some butt plug darts at them and scares them into deep water.

  4. I'll be on the Vision's 5 day lim load trip in three weeks to the S. Islands. I hope to get some more Black Sea Bass with better vis.

That was the first dive with the 10.5. I didn't do well. But hopefully I've learned a lot.

The black sea bass shot was the second I ever took UW with the D2X.
