HELP Info Tahiti/Bora-Bora/Morea Trip

8 posts
  1. Hi all, and thanks in advance for the help.

I just got tickets for our honeymoon in Tahiti / Bora-Bora / Morea. We are going to be there on 12/4 5 nights Morea, 12/9 5 nights Bora-Bora, 12/14 2 nights Tahiti.

I am asking for info on the trip in general, things to do, places to see. Customs if any? Is it ok to buy the Tahitian Blue Pearls there (thats my wife asking)?

I already have found out that lugging all our dive gear + photo equip is going to be a pain flying AA and Air Tahiti (50lbs limit). My other concern is the inter-island puddle jumpers...I cant seem to get a straight answer about weight limitations. Are there alternatives forms of going in between islands?

I need info on RECOMENDED Diving Destinations for all 3 (who/what/where)

    Thanks again.

  2. Hi Nitteo,

I went to Moorea last year, so I will tell you how my experience was. The best dives in Moorea are at the shark feeding points, they are in places where the visibility is the best in the island, so try to do at least one. Sorry I can't give you more info on dive destinations but I stayed at a research station and did all my diving outside the regular dive sites.

About the inter-island flights, I took two of those, all in Air Tahiti. I was carrying all my dive and photo gear (one 32kg suitcase, and a big carry-on). They didn't charge overweight in my flight to Moorea, but they did charge when I went to the Marquesas. It wasn't that bad, maybe something about US$ 2.00 per extra kilo, I paid about US$50 for overweight each leg to the Marquesas.

I brought some pearls for my wife and had no problems with customs. If you are worried about it, have her wear them in the flight back.

  3. Hi Nitteo

I was in Moorea about 6 weeks ago for a week. I dived with Bathy's Club which is located at the Intercon Hotel. They were pretty good. The pattern was two dives in the morning - with a return to the dock between dives - and one Try-A-Dive trip in the afternoon. Dives were 45 minutes in the 50'-80' range: blacktips and grey reef sharks were everywhere; and, something I have never seen before, reef fish followed us as we cruised along. I found a 60mm macro and a 12-24mm lens the best.

I was travelling with over 60kgs of baggage and had no problems at all either with Air Tahiti Nui, who I used to get to and from Tahiti; or with Air Moorea who I used for the 5 minute hop from Tahiti to Moorea.

Black pearls: yep, bought those - well I had to do something to try and sooth my bride who was back at the ranch. Expensive things they are too (pearls and brides). You can buy them free of local taxes provided you get the invoice stamped by Customs at Tahiti airport on departure - and mail it back to the store.

What is there to do: errrr, not a lot. Moorea was a VERY quiet place with most of it in darkness by 8pm. Some nights I was the only guest at the resort. Diving, reading, snoozing and eating was about it.

One fun thing was to rent a two-seater "Bugster", something like a go-kart which you could use to zip around the island - takes about 90 minutes.

I've written up some of this in my trip report (Round The World Dive Trip) which is on this forum. Let me know if you want to know anything else.

And enjoy your honeymoon! Congratulations - I hope you will both be very happy.

  4. Thanks Tim and Luiz...

I dont know if my wife is going to be crazy about swimming around sharks. I on the other hand, am looking forward to taking pictures.

  5. ouch, 50 pounds is tough. How much a kilo do they rip you for?

  7. My wife and I went to Moorea and Tahiti last December. We dove with TopDIVE. Great outfit, certainly know what they're doing, and we had a blast on the shark dives. You can see some pics here:
