Judging from DEMA, the D100 is the industry's choice dSLR. It is higher rez than the D1x, and $2000 cheaper. Aside from the robust body of the D1x, what are its advantages to professionals? How do the AF abilities of the cameras compare - are they as good as their film counterparts, the F5 and N90?

D1x has faster flash sync, the autofocus system from the F5 and a better viewfinder.

More frames per second, firewire, more weather proof body, CAM1300 AF like the F5/F100, greater remote capabilities and easier multiple strobe control, larger buffer.
I've seen it in action in a commercial studio. It does things the D100 cannot possibly due.
There's a reason everyone is rushing to produce a D100 housing and only Seacam did a D1 series housing. Volume.

I'm amazed that so few cameras provide firewire - It is on low end digital video cams so it can't be all that expensive. Sure would be nice for download.

I always take the card out of the camera and use an external reader (which happens to be firewire).
Otherwise, downloading drains camera batteries.

However, I would connect my camera directly if the housing itself had a port that you could connect your computer to... and a port for charging the camera.

Fortuneately i use a Fuji S2 Pro which has firewire built in (in addition to USB). It makes a big difference when downloading 1GB of photos. I usually plug in a mains adapter.
Out of interest, if you have a Compaq iPAQ it uses the same voltage mains adapter and can be used with the Fuji S2 pro.
