Ike DS50 or DS125

5 posts
  1. Looking to purchase an underwater package for my new Canon DRebel XT. I'm getting the Ike enclosure but I was trying to decide on the DS50 or DS125 strobe packages. I'm starting to push my budget so I was considering DS50 leaving the door open for future upgrades.

I'm looking for someones opinion on what differences I might see between the 2 and whether it's worth pushing the budget at the moment for the DS125.

I've been using SLR cameras on dry land for a while but just recently upgraded to a digital that I could get a housing for(previous 35mm didn't have a housing available). I'll be new to "real" underwater photography with this setup. Previously had a simple point and shoot Sea and Sea.

    Any help is appreciated.

  2. Hi!

I had the same to choice to be made when I started with my Digital Rebel.

I went for the DS-520 which was plain WRONG! :)

If you buy the DS-50 instead of the DS-125 you will remember my words each time you

miss the power and the angle of the big one.

PS: You can safe on the sensor, the build in power steps of the DS-125 are enough.

  3. And the DS 125 cycles in 1 sec at full power and faster at lower power settings so you can pretty much shoot, shoot, shoot.

  4. I can second what the others said. If you can afford it get the DS125.

In my opinion a UW flash is something you (hopefully) dont have to change with each Camera Chage any you'll use for several years. So when you invest get the good thing the first time and don't invest in something that you'll get unhappy with in a year or two.

About the Manual Controller: Mexwell is right that you can live with the steps on the DS125. So if money is tight you can save here and get a Controller later. The sownside of shooting w/o a controller is, that the switch on the camera can be (depending on the flash arm and flash position) a good way away from you. Especially in an "action" situation it is nice to have the controler nearby and allways at the same place.

  5. Re "About the Manual Controller:" Actually the Ike housing has a built in manual controller that provides 8 steps in addition to the eTTL controller. So no need for external controller. Just hook up with sync cord and start shooting.
