Cheap housing... which one?

8 posts
  1. After seeing all those new digital cameras I want to own, I have resigned to the fact that I have to make a purchase based on available housings on the market.

What housing would you recommend? It has to be able to go down to at least 40 meters, allow me to attach strobes and lens in the future, and cheap?

  2. None of the "cheap" housings will allow you to attach a strobe directly to the camera. But don't dispair! You can use a "slave" strobe with the "cheap" housings.

You might want to look at the Olympus 4040 and the PT-010 housing or the Canon S40 and their underwater housing. Both are "budget" level setups, meaning you can get the camera and housing for under $1,000 - but just barely. Add a strobe and tray and you are lookin at about $1,500.

  3. Both housing could not be brought down deeper than 30 meters though.

  4. Then get an Ikelite... They're good to like 200' +

I've taken Oly housings down past 30m, and they seemed to be fine. I guess it *is* a gamble, though. :)

  6. Cheap U/W digital camera + housings options:

    1. Olympus 3030, 3040, 4040 + pt 10

    2. Canon S30, S40 + WP-DC300.

    3. Sony p5 + MPK-P5.

The Canon & Sony housings are for 30m only (but a friend of mine took down his Canon to 40m. and its worked fine) the oly have case that go to 40m also.

You can attach lens for all of them with converter (e.g. Sea&Sea).

About flashes: as it said before, you need slaves.

  7. or whatabout ordering yourself a 5050 and the PT-015 housing... that's rated @ 40M...

  8. Although it is rated by the manufacturer to 30M, I have had my PT10 down to 45m without a problem. Just make sure your insurance is up to date.
