camera = manual , strobe = ttl

  1. I was out today for the first time with my 10D in an ikelite housing and 2 DS 125 strobes.

    The session was just to get use to where things are located so I set the camera to F5.6 , 125. I put the strobes in TTL.

    IS this a valid setting? If the camera is in manual and the strobes set to TTL what is the output of the strobes? The dive in British Columbia waters and the water was somewhat dark today so the pics where not horribly exposed but to my thinking this is just luck?

    Any help would be appreciated.

    I also noticed the rig was somewhat negative in salt water without the extra weight. This sort of suprised me given they include an extra weight ?

  2. You need to get used to your system weight and trim wise. However, if you are set to TTL, there is no guarantee that you will get a good exposure at 5.6 - 125. A lot depends on the animal itself, your strobes and many other factors. There is no one setting that is correct.

  3. TTL should work just fine regardless of dark day, light day etc.

    However, for DSLR cameras and lenses a better base setting would be f 8 to f 11 and speed 1/100 with whatever ISO it takes to get the camera to fully expose the pictures at these settings e.g. I use ISO 400 on my D70.

    And no need to dive to test. Instead test in a dimly lit room. If the settings work there they should work fine underwater too.

  4. Thanks guys.

    It was the first time out with dual strobes. I also forgot to put the lens in auto focus so it was very much a half dive.

    Going back out today for a more serious effort.

    One of the benefits of having numerious dive sites minutes away.
