Olympus C-7070 discontinued?

12 posts
  1. Hello All,

I was finally set on purchasing an Olympus C-7070 and Ikelite housing today, and when I started calling around I got some shocking new. Jason at BackScatter told me that Olympus was discontinuing this camera (as of 4 weeks ago), and that they'd be coming out with new models in October (ish). Something about the SP line replacing the C-7070 and others...

He said this was front page news at DpReview, but I don't see this. Anyone know what the real story is?

Thanks for helping to clear this up,

    Greg

  2. Hi Phil,

Interesting, I haven't been able to find anything about the C-7070 being discountinued. The guy at Backscatter told me that it was discontinued 4 weeks ago. Then he told me to get a Sea & Sea MX8000 instead. I guess I won't be calling them back, or at least him.

Has anyone else out there gotten wrong information from them? I've heard really good things about the place from a couple of places.

I was set to order a list of items from them today, but once I was told to stay away from that camera, and then he suggested that I go with something I had thrown out as an option long ago, I figured I needed to ask questions here, and re-think what I was going to purchase.

    Thank-you,

    Greg

  3. Yes, the 7070 is discontinued - you heard correctly. Olympus cameras now-adays have a shelf live of about 6 months.

Backscatter sells all different kinds of cameras and housings, so they were't giving you "fake" advice just so you'd buy from them - they were giving you good facts to help you make an informed decision.

    Cheers

    James

  4. Hi Greg,

I am sure that James is correct regarding Backscatter, also that Olympus and many others turn over the point and shoot cameras at a more rapid pace than SLR's. Olympus also tends to release a new housing for these cameras at or near the time the cameras are released, as in the case of the SP line. See PT-30 housing in attachment.

  5. I was told by Backscatter that it would be hard to get the Oly C-7070, however they did not tell me that it was discontiued. You can purchase from http://www.bhphotovido.com

  6. I don't know if it's still being produced, but it is certainly widely availble. You shouldn't have a problem buying one, if that's what you want.

Off course given the rate at which Olympus turns over their product line, it will be discontiuned in the near future, but the same can be said of any camera of this type you buy today.

  7. Here is where most of the discontinued information comes from:

Also, many local shops say they are not receiving new shipments of this camera, but I also think that the current stock will last at least a few months.

  8. I went ahead and purchased on anyway. I am now the proud owner of a C-7070, Ikelite housing, DS-125 flash, INON UWL-100, and various other "stuff". Man is this ever expensive! :-) I leave Friday for Bonaire.
