Wide and macro for 20d

9 posts
  1. Hi all.

I have been following this great forum for a while and finally made the transfer from Collpix5700 to the Canon 20D.

I am trying to decide which lenses to buy.

I am a Freediver and will take all of the pictures while freediving.

I will go for the Ike housing (have a great deal for it) and now need to buy some lenses.

I will Take the wide on natural light.

For the Macro i will have the DS50.

I thought about buying the Canon 10-22mm. Will it do the trick ? will it be possible to zoom UW ? will the quality be as good as a prime (15mmFE for example) ?

I need this lens for land work also, that is why i thought about this lens, instead of buying 2 lenses - wide and 15mm fisheye.

For the macro: What will be a better choice: 60mm or the 100mm ?

    Thanksa lot in advance

    Erez

  2. Hi Erez,

Welcome to the forum! For wide angle, the 10-22 is a good choice, it is not as sharp as the prime 15mm, but it is an excellent lens too. Yes, it is possible to zoom it undewater. When you buy your housing, make sure you tell the dealer that you need a zoom ring for the 10-22 and you will be set.

As for macro, what depths will you be snorkeling on? I think it will be extremely difficult to get any good macro shot while holding your breath, unless you are very shallow and have some time to find your subject, compose and properly focus. With that said, the 60mm will probably be best because it is faster to focus.

    I hope this helps,

  3. Hi.

I will be diving shallow for macro - max 25m.

I have quite a long breath so a 3 minute dive to 15m' will e no problem :)

If you zoom underwater - wont it effect the sharpness ? the distance between the lens and port changes.... am i wrong ?

Is the 60mm faster then the 100mm ?

    Thanks again.

    Erez

  4. If Erez is who I think he is then he really don't have problem to hold his breath. :)

  5. Yes Erez, the 60mm will focus much faster than the 100mm. That is a general trend, shorter focal length is always easier/faster to focus.

I would immagine that for macro you are not planning pushing the limits of small subjects. The 100mm has an advantage for very small subjects but it is too long for subjects bigger than 15cm or so. The 60mm is better suited to the subjects that you will most likely be after.

  6. Thanks.

I will probebly go for the 60mm.

Now - is the 10-22 a good choice for me ?

I will mostlly shoot in natural light at depths of 0-15m. most subjects will be freedivers and stuff like that.

Is the 10-22 considered a good Uw lens ? sharp, good colors...

  7. Yes.

  8. I'm not sure that the Canon 10-22 will operate so good behind the usual Ikelite's 6'' dome ports.

Since I'm from the Nikonanians I don't really remember post about this combination here but it's was mention few times that the Nikon's 12-24 have soft edges behind the 6'' dome.
