Hi,
I am using exactly same setup you use, Nexus housing, D-70, 16mm & 10.5mm, without any problem. Only difference is Dome port. I use 170 dome port & you use compact dome specially made for 10.5mm.
Did you used 16mm in compact dome port before ? If you did not have problem than it is your lens & if you did not try it before than, it can be the your dome port. Hope it helps.
Sam
Try and fire it on land while in the housing with port off. Then try it with port on while on land. Then try it in the water at the surface. Shoot an over/under, or shoot your hand extended in front of you. This will tell you if it is lens issue or a port issue. If it is a contrast issue, then the method James mention is the way to go.
I had to switch to M for manual while in a cave. Despite the huge DOF, over half were still out of focus, but it would never AF. (I'm talking the 16mmFE)
With a dSLR there is not reason to do a suite of tests to make sure on the controls are operational before entering the water and test firing the strobe too if attached.
Just delete the shots after the test.
If everything is functioning then UW conditions are preventing AF function.
IMHO the D70 AF is marginal.
Nevertheless many on this board have shown that this camera can perform very well underwater, maybe not as well in poor conditions. I would not try it here in AK waters, it is tough enough here to AF with it topside! ![]()

I have now test it and it is or NIKONs d70s AF system or my port.
Becauce with the 10,5 I have not those problems. I have used the 10,5 last day in Blue hole. Windy day Waves and the water full with particles and sand and still, if you do it right, I could take all the pictures I whanted. With AF-S and Spot metering
I beginn to belive that it is the Port and the problem is visible in low visability, becauce if the waters are clear the 16mm is working perfect.

My Nikon 16mm is perfect
