I'm going to Puerto Galera over New Year (two weeks).
Any advice on what (not) to do or bring?

PG's a great diving destination. I go there at least once a year.
Sabang Wrecks, Sinandigan, Kilima Steps and Boulders are great sites for macro.
Try San Christopher, Canyons, Pink Wall (at dusk) and Shark Cave for some wide angle.
At night, visit The Point, and bring a strong liver along!
Cheers,
Mat

I took these on my trip last month to Puerto galera in the philipines had an excellent time diving with Asia Divers. Going back in December with WA/FE lenses....

Any criticism is appreciated......
Alastair.
Hi Alastair,
Exposure's generally good, but I would suggest changing the angle to shoot upwards instead of downward, this generally produces more pleasing results.
This being said, your lionfish shot presents an interesting angle.
The moray eel shot is nice, although seeing more of it, with the face in the upper right hand third would have improved the shot.
The orang-utan crab appears a bit underexposed (at least on my monitor) and would benefit from some exposure correction. Composition could also be improved...
When you go back in Dec, if you have the 12-24mm, spend some time in Canyons and San Christopher. You should get pleasant results.
Cheers,
Mat

HI Alastair,
You have some great shots there, i really like the blue background on the seahorse.
Like Matt though, i tend to think the downward angle is detracting from the impact of your shots. Getting below and shooting up will give more contrast and dimension to your photos and therefore a little more oomph!
But keep up the good work, its great you can head back so soon. PG is a fantastic place

anything pertaining to photography, bring from home. That said, PG is pretty well established for tourism support and the normal consumables can be bought in shops there at fair local prices - batteries, foodstuffs, soap and shampoo, etc. There isn't even any need to bargain.

I have been 3 times in Puerto Galera this year. Just can't get enough of that place.
My best dives so far where in Verde Island. You have to arrange a special trip since is aprox 1 hour away but definitely worth the effort.
I dove with Atlantis and they have the trip available all the time at longest is 4 people or more going.
The best dive of Verde Island was the Washer Machine, very colorful. Beware of Scorpion fish in the channels of the washer machine, is many of them lying just where you would lay flat to stay off the current. I happened to pet one. Very nice for improving your skin tone.

Alastair.
How did you like to dive with Asia Divers? Did you stay in their resort, El Galeon?
I always stay in Atlantis, just around the bend from Asia Divers and would like to know if some other place is equal or better.
