Jewelry might not be that bad. My wife's idea of something new and cool is most likely a Titanium regulator or new video camera and housing and maybe a new mac to make movies on. Although I will admit her movies are far better than my pictures. The real joy is that she is the one asking me to take her to Indonesia, or Solomons or Galapagos.

You want a good excuse for limiting the damage in jewelry? Say it's unenvironmental to buy new diamond and gold trinkets since the mining will destroy the natural habitat. Worked for me for years until she thought...hey he has copper wires in his circuit board...is the glass in the lens lead free?

Or you can always say something like diamond is only so expensive because of the unfair practice and market monopoly by certain rich evil corporation. If governed by a free market, diamond in reality would be worth significantly less than it is! (hmmm.... is that really true? somebody told me about it, I think, but may it I was just reading it in one of them spy novels where evil conglomerates are lurking behind every bush )

Now, a nice looking titanium housing would make a very nice dive accessory and would make a nice fashion statement

They may not be in the majority but I know for sure that I would be in major marital mayhem if I bought my wife a diamond ring or anything else with a diamond. Well the only exception may be a Dremel cutting disk which uses diamond, but those are synthetic "industrial diamonds", which are not extracted from the earth.
