New 4/3 from Olympus

5 posts
  1. Over at DPReview I read some threads about a rumored new Olympus 4/3 camera with an EVF.

Here's my guess: the E-300 doesn't sell a lot. So they made the E-500 and they will replace the E-300 by a rangefinder style kamera that gets rid of mirrors and pentaprisms completely.

If this is true then there is a good chance Olympus will also make an underwater housing for it. (There is one for the E-300.)

This could be my next camera...

    What do you think?

    PMA is in february.

  2. If that's what you're interested in, (camera with large sensor, but no viewfinder) why don't you just buy a Sony R1? They're available now.

    Cheers

The lens in the R1 is less than optimal for underwater use. It would be nice to have an interchangeable lens camera with EVF.

Olympus would probably have to go to a different sensor to make that happen. I don't think the Kodak CCD can have a movie mode, which is what it takes to implement EVF.

  4. The R1 is a big, heavy camera. The only reason I would really look at it would be the 24-120 lens. On land those are nice specs. But for the size and weight, I would just assume use something else.

I would be interested if Olympus could put something in a smaller package.

  5. Size matters to me. The PT-E01 is very compact. Olympus should be able to reuse all ports and accessories for that housing.

Olympus and Panasonic are working together on future 4/3 models. Panasonic can supply suitable sensors.

The Sony DSC-R1 is interesting in many ways, but...
