Searching for a quick release hande / arm -

  1. I am very near to buy a Ikelite DS125 strobe for using it on my freediving photography as fill light...

I like to do some experiments and dont put the strobe in traditional arms but hand holding it so that i can change its distance from my camera

So I am looking for a handle to hold the strobe - and when I am not using it to have it on the camerahousing or on my body.

ULCS have a quick release handle with a knob that will help to use it with one hand

    Ikelite have to some

    Ikelite quick release handles

    Are there other altenatives?

Then I have a Nexus housing with arms. How sould I put the handle in the top of one arm or with a extra tray?

  2. I have the ULCS quick release adapter for the Ikelite tray (Ike has one as well, but I think it lacks a grove for the o-ring). It works quite nicely and you can work the release with one hand if needed.

  3. I have the Ikelite handle with the strobe mount and like it very much.

It is contoured and fits my hand well and it is really easy to remove from the mount using one hand.

I used it as a hand held fill just as you arer intending but I had a Nikonos V and the 15mm WA lens.

  4. Lambis,

ULCS have all the parts you need.

    Part # TR-SC & AC-HQD should do the job.

The TR-SC bracket is used on the subal housings - a quick check shows it should fit the nexus.

I'm sure ULCS can confirm for you.

  5. Nexus housings only have one hole for attaching the handle, I'm pretty sure the ULCS mount would work loose underwater. It is a really nice handle, though.

You can make a quick release arm out of a ulcs handle by attaching a ball to the other side, this would be about 6" long, and would split in half via quick release. The parts you need to do this are AC-HQD and AD-200. This would be substantially heavier than a 5" arm...

Why not just attach the entire strobe arm via a dovetail mount, and disconnect the whole arm? While not quite as nice as a padded handle to hang on to, you can hold the flash by the strobearm.

Yes, absolutely. That is what I don’t like about the ULCS quick release handle. There is just one hole with some space around the knob. The handle is never 100% tight. It is always a bit loose and wobbles. Maybe it’s fine if you hold your housing with the right Nexus handle and just have the quick release handle on the left hand side for strobe transportation and quick release. The grip itself should be great for holding and positioning the strobe.

I wouldn’t use a usual strobe arm which is disconnected from a dove tail. There would be no firm grip for holding the strobe and removing it from the dove tail is kind of hassle, especially for free diving IMO.

  7. I would think that Terry & Dave would be able to have a bracket made or adjust one ( if it doesn't already exist ) that will fit the NEXUS and not work loose.

A spring washer and some loctite should fix it.

The handles tighten well when ALL the supplied washers are used and torqued correctly.

  8. Peter,

I was referring to the "quick release" handle, not the fixed one (which is fix and not wobbling). Or is there any washer or something to be installed at the release knob?? I don't think so.

  9. Julian,

My misunderstanding...... I must have gotten confused in the translation to "Australian" :(

  10. Hi Lambis,

I also use a Nexus D70, and i have a carbon-fiber arm made by an Italian Designer - 'CarbonLight'. I've used it a lot (Every day for about a year) and it has come lose a couple of times, but only when i have not put it back properly. That said NEVER let anyone pick up your camera with one of these arms! People tend to grab it right where the release is.

I have used Ikelite arms, and found these to be of superior quality, especially as the release still works without any maintanence, the Ike one i had in the past froze after a couple of weeks.

Sorry i dont have a name for the retailer, it was given to me by another guest in Galapagos, i'll try and find his card.

  11. Try the Ultralight BA-AQW at ulcs

I've had the dovetail adaptors before and they sucked, it cost me a F90 Subal housing due to them working loose on the boat ride then a friend picking it up by the arm to wash it - Bang- on the floor in pieces!! No Insurance.

For use with the 12-24mm or 10.5mm i strongly recommend this mount for the top of your handles, in conjunction with the carbon fiber arms (1" balls, no oring), i do not have the proper ulcs adapter for my 125, just the normal ikelite ball (1.25") and a combination of ikelite and ultralight clamps

  12. Hi all ,

this is a interesting project for me give me some points of interest for such a release arm .......

release it at the housing tray...... or at the first clamp/ connection to have the last Arm segment as a strobe grip ? or to release it at the strobe ? ....

it should be compatible to ball arm systems ( 1" balls ) .......

    lightwight ......aluminium anodiced

as strong as posible ......not wobbling around

one hand handling ........( left and right hand )

savety lock.....( for idiot proof handling )

I am interested in your to do list ........

    Michael
