A 50mm f1.4 and an 85mm f1.4 - both great portrait lenses for 35mm sized sensors, but not much fun on a cropped sensor Nikon. I wonder if this means FF Nikon is more of a possibility now???

What's wrong with a 50/1.4 on a cropped sensor for portraits?
I would have to agree! Sounds pretty damn exciting actually.
I sure did get the impression from the Nikon folks that they are not real interested in FF sensors.
1.4!! outstanding, and i am not sure what James is talking about either. 85mm is a classic portrait lens
I wonder if they will branch into lenses relevant for UW work. I'd be very reluctant creeping into 3rd party lenses for compatibility reasons, and will they incorporate AFS and VR - or just great glass? I'm very happy with my Nikkor, but I can see the value in a better DX portrait lens than we have available, ideally a 50 1.4 with better bokeh than Nikon's.
Yeah, these will probably both be good people portrait lenses on the cropped Nikon or Fuji.
Cheers

Looks like these are going to be MF only lenses. Should fit Canon too via a Novoflex or Zoerk adapter! (And srew mount lenses on the way too).
They look like very fine lenses but I'm not sure about how practical they are.
The Nikkor 50mm 1.8 is already a super sharp optic, only 1/2 a stop slower and at $99 too! Nikon already has a $300 1.4 version as well.
Nikon also makes a pair of 85mm lenses in 1.4 and 1.8. These too are very good lenses already.
I have both the 50/1.8 and the 85/1.8 and they are excellent. I'm sure the Zeiss lenses will be better but I'm not sure how. As a bonus these lenses give full electronic control. I think were past the point of diminishing returns here. If you really need this kind of quality I think you should be lloking at medium/large format.

Ha Ha.... But seriously, the difference between FF and cropped is widely debated and obsessed over. At best the gains are only miniscule. Medium and large format is the way to go if you think you need these kind of significant gains.
FWIW I don't think these kind of gains are worth obsessing over. There is already loads of quality in the standard SLR/lens lineup.
Zeiss has a much better role to play in offering exotic lenses not otherwise available. Hopefully this is forthcomming.

The gain in quality in going to a larger format is due to the larger sensor. It's 2.25x in area from the 1.5x cropped sensor to full frame and smaller change than that from FF to digital medium format.
There ARE differences in FF and DX format but these are generally nuances and noticeable mainly to the initiated. Going to MF underwater increases a whole host of optical problems and whilst it might increase the information in the centre of the frame it would probably simply show up optical flaws at the edges more than ever. This is already something that is a problem above water with Canon's 1DSMkII - it shows up flaws in lenses! This is where Zeiss SHOULD have pushed forward on - providing superb wide-angles for Canon FF cameras would have been a good move. Why they have announced lenses which will simply compete against good existing fully compatible lenses is a mystery to me. They should be good though.

The problem is, you would need focus and aperture gear as there is no communication between Canon camera and lens.
